Modulus Mob

I've researched this a bit since yesterday and others are saying that it's a bad pot issue (and that the stock pots that came with the OBP-3 are pretty bad quality) and that when the bad pot is replaced, the problem disappears.

I'm going to replace all of the pots first and see if that doesn't resolve my problem before trying a different preamp.

I would highly recommend the Flexcore, it really opened up the bass tonally and also doesn't have the annoying whine, very quiet even with the treble on full boost.

I have owned 2 Modulus basses over the years, actually both of them were in the early '90s. One was a candy apple red M92 fretless 5 string with active EMG, and the other was a Quantum 5 string bolt fretted with active barts and a cocabolo top. The basses were great and I regret getting rid of them, but needed new wheels at the time. I still have the serial numbers for my old basses and it sure would be neat to find out where they are now.

Interesting that they would ship sub-par pots with a decent pre.

Although, I was never that crazy about the coloring of the OBP-3 either, so for me the Flexcore fit the bill as I prefer a more transparent sound.

I had 2, a fretless and fretted. Still have the fretless. I'd say they are about the same as the VJ or quantums and require very little maintenance. I've had my fretless for around 8 years and minus some FB wear it looks new. Zero issues and I've put in a lot on time on this bass. Hey fellow Modulus lovers!

Just a heads up that I am about to list my 1995 Silverburst Q5 Sweetspot in the TB Classifieds... and it is only $1300 shipped!

It is by far the best playing bass I have ever played (including my Fodera). Super low action and a crazy thin neck.

It would be cool to keep this super rare bass in the Modulus Mob so let me know via IM if there is interest.

I have only ever seen 2-3 Sweetspot 5ers go on TB in the last few years. These are really hard to find, and I have never seen another in the silverburst colour.

I think it could be argued that the Genesis necks are actually less complex than the full graphite KLD necks. I don't know with 100% certainty, but my modest familiarity with composites suggests that the T-shaped CF structure in a Genesis neck requires fewer layups, both because it's a simpler shape geometrically and because it doesn't have to be aesthetic, only structural.

I dunno why I haven't posted to the Mob sooner, but I have a 2001 Q5 (has a rod, btw). Sapphire blue over quilt. She's beauty, bassified (I'll post pics tonight, none on my phone atm).

I took out the EMG pickups and the boost-only preamp because they sounded too brittle to my ear. Replaced them with Duncan dual-coils (the ones modeled on the Fodera pickups) and an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. She's much more versatile now, and quite a lot warmer overall. That said, I may pull the Aggie and try another module. If anyone has a recommendation for another preamp that really compliments the Q5's natural brightness (and by that, I mean helps you tame or unleash it as required), I'd be all ears.

I've also added an ebony ramp between the pickups, mounted with double-sided tape.

As soon as I get it together, I'm going to try an ACG EQ01 in my Q6 TBX. I think that will really be able to work with the huge amount of tone available in the bass.
