Would scare me too! I used to have an oil can I filled with WD40. One day I took the pump off and looked inside and it was a MASS of rust! I had three other identical oil cans with other kinds of oils in them and no others had the problem! That cured me of thinking WD40 is good for anything but loosening stuck nuts.

I use Fret Doctor on my fretboard and I suppose it's equally unknown and almost as scary, but so far it seems to work really great. It's supposed to be for wood but it just seems to work well in general.

Hello fellow modulus owners. May I join your mob?

Recently I bought used FB4 from 2001. This bass is just insane, I love it to death.
Anyway, the bass did not come with allen wrench keys for the truss rod and bridge saddles (gotoh 201).

Can anybody tell me what size the truss rod key is? I can neither find this info on the internet, nor modulus tech support replies to my emails. The bridge one appears to be 1.5mm

Modulus isn't going to answer your emails or answer the phone. That activity is not part of their business plan. :hmm:

If it were me, I'd invest in some allen wrenches. A metric set and a standard set. I think a modulus bass is going to be metric, but I'm not sure, maybe someone can chime in on that. If so, you could just buy the metric set.

I've found my metric set today. Bridge is indeed 1.5mm (it's gotoh, they come from Japan. That's why they use metric system).
The truss rod - I guess 5.0 mm key

About their tech support - yeah, I saw many negative posts regarding their communication. Funny is when I wrote to them a week ago asking detailed info on the serial # of this FB4 - they replied in a day or so. But the answer was useless - they just told me to download their catalog for specs. After that they never replied again. Guess my email was added to their black/ignore list :bawl:

I know a lot of people have reported Modulus being slow to reply. I personally had them answer on the 1st or 2nd ring when I called them but that was several years ago. I'd say just keep trying them via phone or email.

Trying to post a quick phone pic of my 2005 Q6. I will also copy a description Modulus emailed me in response to questions I sent them on email. What I'm wondering is does anyone know what strings were on this originally from the factory? I'm the second owner, have had it for about six years, and have never changed some D'Addario's that were on it when I bought it. They're finally too dead even for me. Here's Joe Perman's specs:

5A Quilt Maple top over alder
Sienna Burst finish
Bartolini M56C pickups with the NTMB 3 band preamp
17 mm string spacing @ bridge.

He replied to my email really quickly, but I thought I'd ask you folks first this time.

If they where D'Addario's it would have been the nickel wounds that D'Addario makes and the gauges would be:
.130-B
.105-E
.085-A
.065-D
.045-G
.035-C

Look at www,juststrings.com in the singles section under nickel wounds for D'Addario also one thing I noticed in your description you said it was a 2005 Q6 the the gauges would have been:
.130-B
.100-E
.080-A
.065-D
.045-G
.032-C

And these would have been D'Addario Nickel Wounds also
I know Modulus is using Dunlop strings now on there instruments.

The D'Addario's that are on it aren't the originals, but the first owner put them on and left the package in the case so I would know what they are. I've got a gig this Friday and I'm contemplating changing them, but I don't like how new strings sound or feel (too metallic and "ridgy"). I know this has probably been debated all over the site...any suggestions? I obviously like worn in strings and have been avoiding this issue for awhile.

P.S. Thanks for the gauges. This might be in my owner's manual, but I failed to check before posting.

I use D'Addario's, but I wouldn't mind trying Dunlops. Do you know what gauges the Dunlops are? I have a non-truss rod model Q5 so I'm pretty picky about trying to get these things right.

I love using Sunbeams on my Q6. .120-030s. I find that they aren't as metallic and zingy as a lot of other strings and they do last a good long time. When I got my Modulus, I tried every string on the market (ca. 2000) and most sets felt like a 4 string bass with these two alien appendages on the top and bottom. The only ones that felt like the same bass across the whole instrument were DR, Fodera and Smith. DRs were the only ones back then that lasted for more than a gig or two before breaking a string.

As far as I know the Dunlops that are used now for Modulus instruments are made specifically for Modulus you can't get them from Dunlop yet, I have already checked into this, you would need to buy directly from Modulus.
As far as the gauges go I want to say:
.130-B
.105-E
.085-A
.065-D
.045-G
.035-C

But don't quote me on that, I will talk to Joe Perman tomorrow or Wed. his is finishing my 6 string TBX that will be shipped out next Mon. and I'll verify the string gauges, I'm pretty sure I'm correct but you never know.

I can't phone them. I am not in the US now, so it will be quite difficult to contact them via phone.

Here is the photo - I love this bass, so much PUNCH and GROWL. The clarity is also awesome.
Many say Stingray 4 and FB4 are very alike. So, I can definatly tell that's not true.
For me - if I ever had a chance to compare them before buying - I would leave the shop with Modulus.

BTW, can anybody give me an info on these:
-does your basslines MM pickup has a name written on it? Mine has. I heard that original modulus basslines pickups do not have anything written on them.
-does SD offer basslines pup with closed pickup cover? On their site I saw only generic MM-style-with-open-magnets pickup, like Link Removed

I know we " covered this a few pages back" and I'm sorry for bringing it back up but I did get a email from modulus in case anyone else was curious.

Not to worry, WD-40 will not damage your fingerboard, it is what we use and recommend. However, that is only for phenolic fingerboards (all Modulus Flea basses have phenolic boards), if you have a Modulus neck with a wood fingerboard we recommend using mineral oil.

Sleepy, I too am surprised to hear about the WD-40. I looked at my Q5's fingerboard today while noodling and thought she was overdue for a day of beauty.

I have pic's that Joe sent me from his I-Phone when the bass was first getting sprayed in the spray booth and I down loaded them but when I tried to upload them to put on talkbass the filed failed so I'm not really sure what to do as far as the photos Joe sent me but I will definitely take pic's with my digital camera when I get the bass next week.
