Modulus Mob

-Fretfx are supposed to be the best you can get besides actual built-in leds. I have personally had several occasions in dimly lit venues where I'm playing complex basslines and have messed up because my positioning accidentally shifted and I struggled getting back on track for a few seconds because I couldn't see my frets. That sucked... So I'd like to at least put some fretfx on mine at some point in the near future. Still I definitely wouldn't mind if they had them as a custom option in the first place.

-Tbx models would be great as well! I'd love them to stop being such unicorns so more of us can experience their glory.

-More pickup/preamp options would also be on my list because I really dislike barts and I think they actually rob moddys of their tonal capabilities. Also more pickup configuration options would be cool, like H/S configurations that lakland and ebmm have.

-fanned frets as an option would be an aggressive move as well, I think. A lot of the big-dog boutique companies are doing it so why not? It'd be really cool I think.

- inlay upgrades for stylish looks (I.E. Block inlays for vj4's).

- more wood options for tops and fingerboards (while still adhering to their eco-friendly policy of course).

- more bridge/nut options.

-maybe a new neck style or two, just to offer more variety of feel.

That's all I got for now.

Get yourself a little bottle of phosphorescent ( AKA "glow in the dark") paint, put a little drop on each side dot, let dry. You can "charge them up" just ahead of starting a set with a flashlight if you're going to be in the dark for a long time, otherwise they'll generally get enough charge from existing stage lights to get you through most short to medium length periods of stage darkness. The stuff will retain enough glow to be plainly visible for quite a long time. Definitely worth the 10 bucks or so that a little bottle will cost.

MTD at least does them on the side of the neck, not on the fretboard.

Now if you don't need dots on the side of your neck, you're a better bassist than me... Not that it takes much...

Interesting. I've owned all 3 at the same time and I still think the VJ is my fav! My Q6 is all played just about thru school, but once I got the VJ (for $800 on eBay!) I just fell in love with it. My FU 5 is pretty sweet too. I'm thinking about selling it lately, but not sure. I guess it would be hard to replace.

How would you compare the necks of the quantum vs the FU?

My quantum was a pre truss rod model. So, I'm not sure how much that plays into it, but the Q was thinner. I remember not wanting a 6 at all. I tried a few and disliked the neck. But when I picked up that Q6, it was immediately comfortable. The neck was thinner than the FU. They are similar in that it's a modulus neck, but the Q seemed slimmer and faster. I like them both. Overall I like the FU better, but they are different animals. I used the Q for jazz and fusion. The FU I use for blues and groove style music. It works feel wise and tone wise much better.

Thanks slapagroove, that's informative. So it sounds like what someone once said to me, that the FU necks are meant to be more close to a p bass profile. A bit chunkier and more geared towards that solid, basic groove type thing, much like how I feel on a good ol' precision, am I right? Or maybe more like a stingray neck? Chunky but fast?...

Sorry, this is just me trying to get an idea of something I've never actually held before.

I agree- when I first played my TBX 6, it was ridiculous how easy it was for my left hand to get around on that bass (my right hand technique left/leaves something to be desired). I believe (not 100% sure) that Michael Tobias helped with the neck carving on the original (non-truss) necks?

I never meant to say one is better than the other- I have never played a VJ, but the flea 4 I owned for 24 hours was nice- only returned it because it was a 4. Had I known they were going to become so elusive, I would have kept it. I do enjoy my Q5 immensely though.

For sure. I didn't think you were saying one was better. I just didn't realize that the FU was more sought after. I honestly haven't been the market for a bass in the last 10 years. I've loved the FU and VJ. I'm just starting to really prefer more traditional sounds. Love J and P tones. But, I may hold on to the FU since they are rare. It is one of the best playing basses I've touched. I can get the action lower on this than I could on the Q. Of course, the Q was probably due for a fret job by someone that understood the neck
