Sounds like you’re in a non-fixable situation. Please forward said modulus tbx for complete re-assembly... :)

I recently put Kent Armstrong‘s in my tbx to try and smooth out the mid-honk. Seems like the light tbx’s with maple tops tend to be very mids-heavy tone wise.

You know, mid honk is a good way to put it. Upon further inspection, these are 40DCs with a very old BTC preamp. But, my maple TBX 6 with Bartolinis seemed to have a smoother frequency response.

I wish I was still gigging every week so I could see how it does in context.

back in the 90's, i (stupidly) let go of my blue-green tbx5 because i didn't know how to tame that 'mid-honk'. in fact, that bass sounded like a goose screaming through a bullhorn (had old emg pickups and preamp). since this was before any access to multiple replacement pickups and on-board preamps, i didn't think i had many options so traded it away.

what i also do with my current maple-top tbx is have a parametric eq in the effects loop for even more control over the color and boom.

I have a 94 Quantum 5 with 40DC/40CS pair into BTS circuit. It's not a TBX and maybe the amp settings play A Part in my experience but through several amplifier and FOH systems over the years, this combination although geared best for aggressive applications, I have found to be outstanding in its tone and frequency response regardless of smooth versus variable oscilloscope readings. Definitely no midrange "honk". My only experience with bartolini was with a Pedulla in a live setting which had no character and seemed very flat which I guess is good for some. Just an observation on the DC experience . Obvious EMG fanboy.

I have 40DCX's in my Q5, with the BQC 3 band circuit, I think it is very clear and accurate sounding, but I could see how some would call it "sterile." It id DEFINITELY a higher gain signal than my other basses though. I wasn't impressed with the stock Bartolini pickups, but they make several different flavors, and I like Barts in other basses. I think a lot of it is trial and error.

I do agree about amps though, especially cabs. I had some of the Genzler array cabs for awhile, and they were really nice, but they presented the mids and highs a LOT different than the usual woofer/tweeter cabs.

what loveandbass is probably referring to is that the thru-neck section that marries with the wings is basically hollow:

so the lp humbuckers three mounting screws:

would need to be anchored to a block of wood strategically placed in the hollow section of the tbx thru-neck.

I get that. The LPs I had back in the day had the two screw holes like an EMG.

Wait, something's missing in that picture: Every TBX I've ever seen (including the '96 I own) has a KLD graphite centerpiece visible on the face of the instrument. It may still form a hollow cavity when married to that back plate shown in that photo, but the basses do not consist exclusively of the monocoque form shown in that photo without additional carbon fiber in the centerpiece.
