Modulus Mob

No, I sold the blue one years ago. I ended up with a stable of three 6's. I'm considering trading the one on the right for the green 5 TBX shown above.
Very nice. The one in the middle in cornfusing me- has the more modern neck pocket but the older logos and I don’t see a hole for the “relief adjustment system”...

Good eye! This is kind of a frankenbass. I bought the neck in 1999 and initially used a body that Larry Pogreba (luthier noted for his resonophonic guitars played by Bonnie Raitt and Keb Mo) cut out of a 100 year old mahogany barn door. That worked well and sounded great, but I did too many experiments on it, resulting in it getting pretty hacked up. I had this idea about creating preamp options, where each one went on its own plate that could be swapped out with multipin connectors. So, I asked luthier Jack Read to build me another body. It turned out that he had a 5 string Modulus body lying around, so he adapted it for the neck. Honestly, though, the straight up mahogany body sounded better.

What I really miss are the Lane Poor pickups I had in there for a while. I sent them back to Lane because they were crazy noisy and then he went out of business. Oops.

Cool. The switchable preamp idea is interesting, Brubaker was advertising that for his basses for awhile. Now with everything being so modular and small, it’s probably more feasible.
Hm. I still have some blank plates. Maybe I should give it a shot! I'd love to put Alembic pickups in there.

Anyone know what kind of bridge this is on my Quantum?

I'd like to replace it because the action, even with the neck arrow straight, is somewhat high for my liking, and the bridge is bottom'd out all the way. If anyone has suggestions for a better/lower bridge I'm all ears.

Hipshot Model A

As for a replacement, I've *heard* that the Model B can sit a little lower but please don't take my word for it!

Thanks - I had a flea bass long ago with a Hipshot B and that thing played like butter. I'll give it a shot, assuming they swap out easily.

I've just returned from the Hipshot site and indeed the model B lists a lower minimum height of .39 as opposed to the Model A's .4

Check out their specs for other measurements but I'm leaning towards yes you should be able to swap them out with minimal fuss.

the b-style bridge isn't a 'drop-in' replacement. the a-style uses 3 mount screws and the b-style uses 4.

i've swapped out a few abm bridges because they 'bottom out' fairly easily and the only recourse (if you stay with the original bridge) is to sink the bridge a few mm into the body.

for getting the height of the strings as low as possible, i swapped in either schaller or hipshot b-style bridges.

Ah, I was just looking at the drawings and yeah they don't seem to line up. Too bad. But still worth the effort to make it work, I'd think.

I really like the Schaller roller bridges, I have one on my M92 5'er.

The other option is to shim the neck. Should be really easy for any bolt on necked bass.

You could also try some taper or exposed core strings, that'll get you lower as well.

I'm thinking of swapping out the pickups on my new to me TBX 5. It's got EMGs and I'm pretty sure they are the 40Ps. I've had those before and I'm not a fan. I'm considering either the 40CSXs or the Bartolini Classics that drop in. Lane Poor would be nice, but hard to get.

Thoughts?
