That does sound odd- my experience with Aguilar pre’s is a little goes a LONG way… is it stock? Are you the original owner? Maybe someone effed up the install…

No idea of it is stock, I am not the original owner. Maybe I need to look up a wiring diagram and see if I can make heads or tails of it compared against what's in the cavity?

I also had the same setup and was very underwhelmed. The OBP3 is just a really subdued preamp with the bartolini pickups. I went with a bartolini NTMB preamp and Lane Poor humbucker. I kept the bart jazz. This combo is pretty nice. A Seymour Duncan MM would also work nicely here.

Anyone have suggestions on new pickups and pre for an MM+J funk unlimited? Currently has Bartolini pickups and an obp3. I'm not fond of the pre. Have never really like bartolini pickups in general. I can dial a sound that is acceptable but it's not really grabbing me, eventually I stop and say to myself "this is how it's voiced". It's ok, but I think the pre at least should go. The mid selector (push/pull) and pot adjustment barely make any changes. Like barely. The signal seems low but if I crank the bass it gets a lot hotter. Bass at the center detent seems a bit weak, turning up increased output...

I've been thinking of a complete emg setup.

Looking for suggestions, thanks!

I have a 4 band 4 knob Pope Flexcore that I bought for another bass but haven't gotten around to installing yet , but it looks simple enough. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

This is the archetypal situation calling for the Toothpick + Elmer's Glue solution.

I have heard that solution in the past but to be honest I have achieved great results with simply going to a hardware store with a good variety of wood screws and getting a longer screw.
Take the strap button with you and make sure the shank of the screw will fit through the hole and the head on the screw is seated properly in the button.
Since this seems to happen most often when we're about to strap on the bass on stage, much like changing out new strings or a battery , frequent inspections on the bass before you leave home helps. Much as you wouldn't want to spend needless money, I would still as a second Resort take it to a professional guitar tech and have him properly seat a new screw. If it's just a beater bass, then whack away

A tech will use toothpicks and wood glue. It's the standard way of doing it. It's your money, pay for the labor or do it yourself. I've done it with toothpicks and Elmer's wood glue on my funk unlimited.

I did it with a proper size screw. Still tight.

I'm very much in the same camp. I know/see that the OBP3 is a popular and well-loved preamp, but for me, I've never come across a bass whichs is 'improved' by this preamp. The way the mids & treble are adjusted relative to the bass just don't appeal to me... In the cases when I have a bass with the OBP3, I tend to just leave it flat (to keep it out of the way) & EQ elsewhere in the signal chain.

As alternatives, I've quite enjoyed some Bartolinis (NTMB), and John East's preamps are also fantastic (and very easy to install).

I've no doubt mentioned this here before, but I installed an ACG/East EQ-02 preamp in my Modulus, and even with both filters completely wide open -- in theory, totally out of the circuit -- the bass sounds better than it ever did with the stock electronics, or with the EMG BTC I replaced those with.

Never tried the filter preamp - but now you're giving *me* ideas on what to put inside my Sonic Hammer

Another points about John East is that if you have questions - he's very responsive, both over email, and over phone. If you need something that isn't on the website, have a chat with him, and you may find a solution (e.g. I needed some extra knobs beyond what came stock, and a piezo-buffer - which at the time weren't on the website. he said he was re-designing the piezo buffer, and would have some in stock in a couple of weeks, so he held my order till then. It was another few weeks till it appeared on the website.)

I left in 1995, and at the time, we weren't doing much bubinga or chechen. We were doing some chakte kok, which was reddish, but can fade over time. Hard to say.

OK, here’s a strange question: I have this bass, the very first Quantum. I was going to take it to a gig tonight and let someone play it. You know, that sort of thing that happens these days. But, it’s old and crackles, and makes noises. I have half a mind to rip the guts out and just put something fresh in. But, this is what they call a historic bass. What should I do? Should I leave the original poopie in there, try to fix it, put new stuff in, put all the old stuff in a bag that will follow it around?
