Modulus Mob

Don't know if he sells necks but I would assume he does. Jerry is in Washington state and his number is 360-273-7744. He was great to work with. Geoff Gould may sells basses as well but I doubt Jerry builds for him. THey founded Modulus Graphite together but parted ways a long time ago. Good luck.

2017 Modulus Funk Unlimited 4 P/J
Ash body, satin finish
34" scale, 22 frets
Phenolic fretboard, satin finish neck
Bartolini P/J pickup configuration, Aguilar preamp
BadAss II Bridge, Hipshot D-Tuner
8lbs 10oz
Original gig bag

It played and sounded great. What is something like this worth?

Honestly I feel like there’s a laaarge variance in prices depending on years, specs, and I guess whoever happens to be on the market for one.

I feel like the fact that it’s newer might be a plus. The OG single humbucker version seems to be preferred over a p/J configuration. What finish? Just clear satin over the ash body?

Is it the one on reverb?….my estimate would be 2500-3k but I wouldn’t be surprised at someone paying more

How often do you turn your truss rod? Whenever I go to the luthier(every six months), he tells me the neck's condition is far from normal. My Mod was made in 2000. It is quite an old instrument, but I still can't understand why I suffer from its neck issue. Any advice?

Assuming you’re not changing string gauges it really shouldn’t be moving much or at all.

I saw it at the shop in St. Paul but it's on Reverb as well. It's a clear satin finish on an ash or alder body. I liked the sound of the P/J pickups. Thye are asking $3,200 I think.

String gauge? I've used DR and Daddario .125 and .130 gauge and changed the string at least every six months. Luthier said my Mod's neck relief changed so rapidly that he had to turn the truss rod a lot. It is not stable.
There are cases of Modulus necks bowing due to shrinking of the phenolic fingerboards. There is a more detailed explanation somewhere in this thread on a previous page. In some cases, the truss rod (if it's a truss rod equipped model) can counteract this to a certain extent.

Does your bass have a phenolic fingerboard or a wooden one?

It also may not be the neck but the strings you used. The difference in tension between DR and D'addario strings can be quite high depending on the model of string used. AFAIK DR round core can be quite low tension compared to a nickel would D'addario string. If the relief changed around the time you changed string brand, that can explain the movement.

My mod has a phenolic fingerboard. I've been using Daddario since last year, but I changed string models whenever I changed string before. It is still strange that the string model affects the neck that much.

I remember some members saying that DR strings caused their Modulus necks to backbow a bit because of the lower tension. But switching back to a different string brand fixed the issue.

Is your Modulus neck bowed forward or backbowed?
Thank you for sharing your opinion. It seems the string model can be one of the possible reasons for my Mod's condition. I can't recall how my Mod's neck was when I used DR. But currently, it is bowed forward with Daddario.

Hello All, I have an '89 I think Quantum 5. I can't really find out that much info after searching for it. I bought it used in 1991. I know the tuners aren't original. Did they come stock with EMG's? I've been using the G Gould strings with the exposed core B & E after they stopped making the GHS progressives with the exposed core B & E. I am thinking of going to flatwounds. Anyone using flats on a modulus 5? If so any recommendations? I have a few pics attached.

Your bass looks very much like my 1988 Quantum-6 SPX, which did indeed come stock with EMGs. Does yours have a traditional square chrome neck plate with 4 hex bolts (rather than the plate-less neck bolts used on later Quantums)? If so I'd say it's definitely a Quantum-5 SPX.
[Edit: Or possibly a Quantum-5 SP ...the giveaway would be the fingerboard width. Measure that at the nut and at the 24th fret.]

Bob, thanks for the reply. I will check the neckplate when I get home, honestly don't remember. Do you have the same 3 controls, volume, pick-up mix with center detent and stacked eq with gain and freq both with center detents?

^^^That sounds like an EMG BTC setup. No, mine originally came with a generic electronics harness consisting of volume, pickup mix, and a single passive (!) tone control. After a few years I replaced that with an EMG BTC. And then several years after that I replaced the BTC with an ACG/East EQ-02 filter-based preamp, which really woke up the sound of the bass!
