Tempted to sell / trade my Modulus... Someone offered a 75 Fender P, really good shape. Just not sure who's on the winning side or if its an even trade.

I cannot imagine any Fender Precision from 1975 being a better instrument than a Modulus Quantum 5
...unless you really hate the Modulus sound, or really want to get away from a 5-string?

I decided against the trade for the vintage Fender. Anyway, the whole reason I had it posted was the tone. I don’t know what it was that I didn’t like. I thought it had EMG 40DC’s in it but it’s got CS’s. I replaced the neck pickup with a 40P5 and it really turned that bass around. I also made some changes on the dip switches for the preamp. I’m really liking what I have now. I’m tempted to swap the other CS with another P5 or run with a J. Just to see if I can make an already huge improvement better.

As far as the CS I removed? Is there a market for those and what would be a fair price? Looks like new. If I swap out the other, I’ll have 2 to move.

just my opinion, but all three here are 40P's and sound brilliant to my ears (and i'm not a big emg fan). ymmv.

I'm going full EMG soon, including the BQC system. Any ideas on what can I do with the toggle switch?

The TB answer is always “producer switch.” ;)

Are you going to have the pickup slots routed out? There’s rumblings in the Spector thread about EMG making Bart P2 and P4 sized pickups soon, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

I’m looking to buy a 35” scale Modulus. I’ve read that Some of them were produced without truss rods? How do I identify what years or models? Thanks.

Every model before 1996 (+/- 1 year…I know it was somewhere around that time) was made without a “truss rod” or whatever it’s called in Modulus-speak. “Neck Relief Adjustment Rod” I think.

Has there been any problem associated with non adjustable necks?

You might be asking the wrong guy. :-)

Some small percentage of pre-1996 Modulus Graphite necks have experienced an issue because the phenolic fingerboard material expands and contracts at a different rate than the carbon fiber of the neck. Worst case, this yields a severely warped neck which requires major surgery by experienced carbon fiber technicians to resolve.

I don’t know how many total Modulus necks have had this issue. But I do know that 100% of the Modulus basses I have owned had this issue! (Two of them, both 6-string Quantum’s, one from 1988 and one from 1996.)

Since you didn’t specify which 35” Modulus ;)

On the quantum models, this is how you tell it has a truss rod

The genesis basses (with the wood neck and graphite spine) also have the truss rod, access is at the neck heel under the screw on cover
