Im in a dilemma..i love my Modulus in everyway.. i have posted how much i love this bass yes..but the honeymoon has finished and the tone has come to bare...

the slap tone is killer, but i cant get away from the fingerstyle tone...its harsh, the highs are brittle and glassy... i want warmth, mids, ..im wondering if i change to single coils this may help... i think pups have alot to do with the tone... i really dont want to give up on this bass as i frickin love the look the action, playability..i had a CS jazz and the tone was superb, but the playability, weight,... wasnt there.. can i have both worlds?

the pre is a 2 band bart..the pickups are bart duals.. ive been told single coils may open up the sound and balance out the lack of mids...

i love the tone of an MTD, which is modern right?
please help TB

any thoughts...

i would definitely look at pickup/preamp swap options. If you're not liking the mid character of the Barts, you could change the pickups. If you're looking at tweaking the mids to your liking, definitely go for a 3-band preamp with either a sweepable mid feature (preferable) or a switchable mid frequency (usually switches, could be internal or external).

On the Modulus website, the VJ pickups just say "(2) Bartolini passive J pickups" which tells me those are most like single coils already if the bass is stock.

Mart these are totally silent. which leads me to think they were dual coil? unless they are hum cancelling? am i wrong?

im a big believer that its the way the pups are wound.. maybe i the tone would benefit from over wound pickups.. i dont really want to shell out for a new preamp when it may be the pups..im sure the Bart pre is a great pre...it starts from the pups right?

in an ideal world i would have an East U Retro with some NJ4's
