Modulus Mob

Question to Modulus owners, I am super crazy about my basses. Where can I buy a replacement barrel jack for my 1998 Modulus Genesis 5? I just replaced my Bassstar jack with a Switchcraft jack, but I do not know where to get the barrel one that is used in my G5.

That's going to be sick dude!

It's more like 17.5 or 18mm spacing isn't it? My Flea 5 is definitely wider spacing than my sterling 5 or spector ...

Hey D
I think its the same as my Sterling 5 (17 MM) I think why it feels a little different is because the FU5 does not taper as much as my Sterling. (I could be wrong...) Anyways I'm bored out of my mind right waiting to go on...

Happy New Years Mob.

Super excited about this funky new addition to my basses, modulus flea bass, ignore the warwick thumb.:bassist:

Happy New Year fellow Modulus owners. I'm not a member of the mob, but I do own a 2007 Flea 5 with quilt maple top . Sweet bass. Question for you all: have any of you ever had chips on the graphite neck repaired? If so how did you do it? Also, I worry about letting your average guitar tech do work on it because I'm afraid that they may not be familiar working with a graphite neck and that they may screw something up. Am I worrying needlessly? Any advice is appreciated.

PS - how do I become a member of the mob?

I had a deep, dime-sized chip in my VJ neck. I fixed it by filling it with innumerable layers of wipe-on poly. It's not the prettiest repair but it works and has held up. CA glue MIGHT be a quicker solution.

Jim, I have not had to have a repair like that, but I doubt many techs could do it and make it look good.

I happen to be at a fellow TB'ers house this weekend and he showed me his newest acquisition: a hollow body Q5. The problem: large chips all the way up and down the neck on both sides where the fingerboard meets the neck. Thank goodness he bought it from GC so he can send it back. Modulus quoted him $1000 to replace the neck. ZOuch.

Those necks are not cheap. Did he buy it used?

When they put those necks on they also setup the bass to the exact specs it needs to be....I almost had to replace a neck last year and it turned out to be the strings!!

Yup, from Guitar Center, so its going back. As I'm thinking about it, it could have been caused by a lose truss rod and/or heavy strings that were not adjusted for.

Hi All,

I'm late to the party but there you go. I've got a 1989 Modulus Bassstar. Will try and get a decent pic of it at some point. For those who don't know, it's kind of like an early VJ. 1.5" at the nut. It's got EMG P-J pickups with treble, bass and mid EQ controls, ash body and maple top, and I added dunlop straplocks and hipshot ultralights with a bass extender. Strung with Markley Nickel Plated Steels.

It's been my main bass since 1999.

Now, my question.

I'm wondering about swapping strings or maybe even pickups for more tonal variety. I have two issues:

1. I need string suggestions. I've recently started playing with people in more traditional roles where I want a darker rather than brighter sound. Even with the treble all the way down it's still a bright bass. I'd still like to be able to get that piano-like sound but also to be able to have it sound more "boom boom" ish. So I don't think I want flats (I do strum sometimes) but I need something with less zing.

2. I am wondering about switching out pickups. I run it through effects all the time but some don't seem to like the active output. I am thinking of adding in passive pickups. I'd like suggestions. Again, I love the bright piano-y EMG tone as a starting point, but I'd love to be able to roll more of it off from time to time. I had Barts in an old bass and found them too polite. Seymour Duncan? G&L (I do like the sound of their basses)? Someone else?

I play mostly post-rock, electronica and rock.

Of course one option is to use different basses for different purposes, and it may come to that. But I still have a fantasy that this one can do it all. Most importantly, it feels the best in my hands of any bass I use.
