Modulus Mob

Hi All,

Joining the mob. 1989 Bassstar. Quilted maple (I think--don't know woods very well). I occluded the serial number with a hipshot. EMG P-J, individual volumes for each pickup, concentric tone pots for bass and treble; mids boost/cut and sweep. My mods: hipshot ultralights/xtender and dunlop straplocks. Sometimes I think I would benefit from a passive option but I do love the sound of the bass as/is. It's been my main bass since 2000.

how's the access to the 24th fret?

Lent my Modulus Jazz to a good friend for a special gig hes got...In exchange ive got his Fender Jazz 24... although i have been enjoying the Fender ive realised how good the Modulus is... Ok its £1700 more but it really feels like it... its just got sublime playability and quality.. Get it back saturday...hurrah..!

its great trying out other instruments, it puts your own bass into perspective... i am a proud Modulus man through and through..:hyper:

Good luck with the repair! Was it easy to order parts from them?

Well, I was fortunate enough to be able to contact one of the head guys at Modulus directly...I am pretty sure he is a TB member....so I have communicated with him on and off over the past few years....so if I need anything I just contact him.

They actually sent me the wrong screws....I needed the screws that go in the ENDS of the tuning keys...that hold the wings on and they sent me the screws that hold the tuners onto the actual headstock.

Anyone know where I can get the screws that go in the ENDS?

Also wanted to say that anyone replacing the neck ferrels should be EXTREMELY careful. The originals are larger than the holes somehow and it cracked the finish when i was pulling them out...and pulled some of it off to the bare wood. I was upset to say the least.

What's up w/ the finishes on Modulus instruments? I had some Dunlop Straplocks flush mounted in my Quantum and the clearcoat completely flaked off around the drilled holes.

Well, the new strap buttons that they supply are sent with felt circles to put between the bass body and the button.

I just don't understand the ferrule situation....I mean as I was pulling each one out, not only was it a task, but there was NO WAY to get them out without prying, which means indentions on the bass body, and you could literally hear the finish cracking as you did it...but I had to do it b/c they were rusting and could have jacked everything up. Pretty disappointed about the whole thing.

I left a voice mail for Anderson Page over a week ago and never heard back. Granted NAMM, but just re-iterates my previous comments about their poor customer service, at least to me.

So maybe you guys can help with my question:

What would have been the recommended strings for my 2004 Q5; I believe stainless steel, but what gauges?

Thanks,
P

what are you using to pry them out? if its a srewdriver?? you should put something flat underneath the driver to keep the pressure off of one point.. sorry ive not read your previous posts, but if the screws and ferrules were rusty why not clean them up...you could also use a stock a die set to re thread the rusting ferrules if the screws were hard to get back in.. i would never try and force them out on such a bass..

For the 5 strings it is the D'Addario EXL170-SL. 45-130. That is coming straight from Modulus and that is what they are shipped with. I use them on my Modulus and won't use anything else after trying all kinds of strings.

Keep in mind that they are a pretty small operation so sometimes it does take awhile for them to get back. They are always busy and Anderson works in the shop too i think.

Heck, it took Fender 2 weeks to get back with me and they are huge.

Thanks Sleepy Monkey, these are nickels, right? I think that is the same set that Roscoe puts on their 5ers too.

Yeah, I hear you on the small operation and that's what I like. I understand that they are busy and a small company, just I have never talked to a human whenever I have called them and email response is not much better.

I just ask for a quote on a modulus vj at planetbass.

I first asked for a quote on a neck but i wasn't sure if the neck would perfectly fit my fender body.

There are not a lot of reviews about the VJ. Anyone of you have comment or suggestions?

Hère are the specs i was thinking about:
Black body, white pearloid pg
Composite neck and fretboard
Fretted, bartolini pickups
Obp-1 preamp

Thanks for your help

bassman74: specs sound cool. I had a Roscoe LG 3006 with Bart pups and a Aggie PO-3 preamp. Gotta say, I loved the Aggie OP-3, great, open sounding pre amp. I have my Quantum 5 (playing it as I type, sort of...) and it has the Bart NTMB pre and standard pups which sound tight and focused with plenty of high end (almost too much with Modulus). I turn the treble way down. In my opinion, the Aggie opens things up a little more than the Bartolini; both are great options.

I think your specs will sound very aggressive and cool and sure others will chime in. Good luck,Pete
