Modulus not Flea anymore

I agree with you there. That makes the most sense. Who knows though, we all could be way wrong. I'll try and get a hold of somebody on the phone at Modulus tomorrow. They won't answer, but I figure it's worth a try. I just gotta know why the name change.

yeah that's really all i can think of... something must have gone down for him not to even be on the artists page.

I haven't seen "Flea" w/ the missing tooth logo on the headstock since I think 2000, maybe 1999.

I know Stefan (Lessard's) Fleas did not have it on them, and he ordered 4 in late 1999/recorded "Everyday" with them in 2000.

Flea's live tone w/ the Jazz is awful, especially b/c it seems/sounds like he still has the flats on them.
When was the last time anyone saw him use that live?

At Live Earth last summer he was rocking his new Flea. I've only seen him with it since.

The "FB" or "FU" is an incredible piece. They don't need Flea's endorsement to move that bass...

I really like Flea's tone with the Jazz bass. I really hope he goes back to it. It sounds like a fretless with bite. I don't care how little it cuts through, it's got mad thump and growl even though it's not sharp and rattly so you can hear it over John's guitar.

Yes, the Jazz was still wearing flats the whole time, and for some reason, he didn't want to change to rounds on that bass. But according to the RHCP site, he stopped using it because he wasn't getting the 'zing' he needed live (again because of the flats).
Seem like there would have been an easy solution there, eh?

I for one hate signature basses anyway, so I don't care. I'd rather see him just go play a bunch of different things again.

How 'bout Freekbass? No, already an artist by that name.

FlyBass. Already done.

Free Base? Er no, it appeals to crack ho's and people that don't pay big money for signature basses.

Fleet Bass? No, sounds like something to stick up yer keister.

Flee Bass. Hmmm, write that one down.

Fuzzy Furry Bass. Eh, no sounds like a Bootsy thing.

Plea Bass. Nope.

3 Bass. Hmm

Former Chili Pecker Bass - er, no

The Congo Bass - Nah, people will think it looks like a toilet seat.

Funk Bass. Yeah! That's the ticket.

What I don't really get is how we can judge him for making decisions based on money. That is in no way selling out-- that is being smart.

Granted he's a big rock star and really rich and whatnot, but being a musician is still his job. It isn't reasonable to expect him to just do stuff for the music and the expression and whatnot. That is important and all but he still has to think about how his name and image are being used... same thing with Modulus-- they're investing in promoting his image with an expected return on his part. His endorsement was a business deal and he is a businessman. If an endorsement from Fender fulfills both his artistic wants and his financial expectations then I say good job to him for finding what works for him. Same goes for any other company he affiliates himself with.

That's the 1st time I've read the Sting ray story.

One thing that's interesting to me about that deal is that relatively, for these guys, $100K is really not all that much dough. I mean for someone that's sold records like Flea has that seems like a small amount to NOT play the instrument you want to. And for EB - I don't know - is $100K a lot for endorsement/advertising? I'm curious what a 1 full page, full color ad in Bass Player costs for 1 month just to put things in perspective. Anyone know?

Sounds like more than dollars to me.
