By The Way: Flea bass, Jazz Bass (I think)

Stadium Arcdium: Jazz Bass, Flea Bass (maybe)

From what I have read throughout various interviews:

On Californication he uses the Jazz Bass for the song Easily.

On by the way he played the flea bass but also recorded some takes with his Jazz Bass but he doesn't know if they where used.

On stadium arcadium most of the album is recorded with the jazz bass but I read that he also used his bssm wal on a song (unfortunately he didn't mention which one) and a MM sterling on hump de bump and one more song which I guess it's Tell me baby

I know one of the Modulus guys and while chatting he mentioned they were not happy with Flea's endorsement of the bass. This was right after that sig bass came out and the RHCP were on TV a bunch at the time and every time they were on TV, Flea was playing that vintage fender jazz.

Flea got the modulus endorsement right after One Hot Minute (1997). An all of One Hot Minute's video clips he is seen playing a black MM stingray besides My Friends where he plays his alembic. Now the first video clip from Californication album is Scar Tissue where he plays nothing! Second video is Around The World (1999) where he plays his flea bass for the first time on a Video.

Interesting read. To me that says that whatever bass he is playing is secondary, he tries to dial in his same own sound every time. This in turn makes a signature bass from him "worthless", as signature for him only means: "more money for meeeeeeeeee ahahahahahahahhhhhhh"

I think if Fender gave Flea a bass, id loose respect for them.

But, your respect for Fender was still nice and tight after Pete Wentz got a signature bass?

I don't think its a case so much of him trying to dial in the same sound everytime but just the tone he gets from his fingers. I remember reading about Stadium Arcadium he recorded the album on the jazz bass with super dead strings and didn't really care what his amp was set like and its still his sound.

I don't claim to know much about Flea, but I agree with what I think is the point here, Blizzard, and it may carry more weight than many people are ready to accept.

Pete Wentz gets a signature bass, even tho hes only been around 4 like 5 seconds, and cant play!


but Mike Dirnt, who has been around 4 ages, plays some really cool stuff (old Greenday that is) and gets a signature model at the same time, it takes the mikey!

Im a green day fan here. Mike has some really cool bass parts especially on "Dookie".

I think Flea will go to a new company that he hasn't played before or hasn't played a lot of before to make him a sig bass. Just like modulus was a company he had never been seen playing before.

As much as i like Flea sound with the Fender. A fender sig would be wrong. When you think Flea you think of that single humbucker and active bass like the stringray or the modulus. Shell pink with tort and stake nobs would be nice bass but not as a flea sig because that's just not what he's known for or made his name with.

Sponsorships are always best with the big guys! Fender deal just makes a lot more sense financially and that is all that really matters. If that wasn't true there would be no sense in him even having a deal
