Monkees ?

Late to this thread, but a huge fan. Lots of interesting and eclectic music going on in those albums once you got past the bubblegum hits. Mike produced a catalog's worth of fantastic country-tinged rock. Mickey was into experimental/psychedelic and can be heard playing one of the first Moog synthesizers. Peter wrote a number of endearing hippie tunes. Only Davy contributed very little as a musician.

It's worth your while to get copies of the albums with bonus tracks or the "Missing Links" series of tunes which never appeared on the albums proper. "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" is absolute pop perfection, with a pulsating bass line, and never made it to the albums. Also there are three versions of "I Don't Think You Know Me", each with a lead vocal by Mike, Mickey and Peter. Another great pop tune not on the albums.

And yeah, some nice bass lines in their repertoire also.

While the Monkees themselves were nothing special (only Nesmith could play an instrument even a little bit), the music they recorded was extremely well crafted, and their voices and looks were iconic. Were they "better" than the Beatles? It depends on how you look at it. They were different, certainly. Personally, I like the Monkees' voices better for the most part, but the Beatles were much better musicians. So, what's better, better voices, better singing, better command of the instruments, better writing???

Actually both Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith were professional musicians before being part of the Monkees.

Pleasant Valley Sunday. If you're from New Jersey the next time you head down rt 280 keep that song in mind.

My band performs "pleasant valley sunday" (goffin/king) and we are working up "a little bit me,a little bit you" (neil D.) for our next gig in tribute to Davy Jones passing. Man, I would love to do "Goin Down" with a horn section, such a groovin tune and a mouthful of words to spit out, wonder how many passes they took at that before they got a keeper.
