Monkees ?

I can make many music "experts" cringe with my opinion that the Monkees are better than the Beatles :)

Imagine if they had never been on TV. I mean, if "their" music had been on the radio for a year or two prior to the series. I suspect it would be more "acceptable" to listen/play Monkees music.

Let's hear your opinion.

Um, I like the monkeys...............but no.

The monkeys have about one albums worth of really good songs that either Mickey or Davy sang but someone else wrote, and someone else performed.

The Beatles have ten albums worth of really good songs that they wrote, performed and sang.

No contest, and again I like the Monkeys.

Um, yes, that is my opinion. Personally I don't care at all about having the right musical taste, fashion sense, or picking the right bass for metal or Beatles covers.

The Beatles used studio musicians, had producers, managers, arrangers and people picking their clothes. They both appealed heavily to little girls who cared more about haircuts than music. Deifying either is rather foolish. I like the Monkees much better.

How did The Monkees headline over Jimi Hendrix? imagine following Jimi
At that time-
The Monkees were a known entity...Hendrix not so much.
The Monkees (as were The Beatles) were HUGE Hendrix fans & requested The Experience as their opening act.

The difference could not be much greater !
Will only add that....at that time ;)
Things like this were tolerated & expected (although from the mini-Documentary I saw on The Monkees...their fanbase wasn't too thrilled with Hendrix. Not sure how accuarte that film wa, however).
Check out the Fillmore East concert listings...how about Miles Davis & his electric bands opening for Laura Nyro?

I saw a documentary about a week ago and I was shocked to learn that:

Within months of the Monkees going on air (there had already been premarketing with airplay of a couple tunes) - They were selling more albums than the Beatles

By the time season 2 rolled around, they were selling more albums than the Beatles and Elvis combined (I nearly fell off the sofa!)

I have always liked the Beatles and the Monkees - great bass lines from both

The Monkees were the HUGEST in 1967! And I mean HUGEST!

The Monkees at Number One (Billboard)

Singles:

Last Train to Clarksville (Nov. 5, 1966) - 2 weeks

I’m a Believer (Dec. 31, 1966) - 7 weeks

Daydream Believer (Dec. 2, 1966) - 4 weeks

Plus: A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You (#2 Billboard), Pleasant Valley Sunday (#3 Billboard) - Five Top 3 Singles on the Billboard Hot 100, 1967.

Albums:

The Monkees (Nov. 12, 1966) - 13 weeks

More of the Monkees (Feb. 11, 1967) - 18 weeks - knocked The Monkees off

Headquarters (June 24, 1967) - 1 week

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. (Dec. 2, 1967) - 13 weeks

During 1967, the Monkees held the Number One spot, on the Billboard 200, for a combined 29 weeks in 1967, with four separate albums.

Fair enough, but you kind of undermine your first paragraph with the second. It's enough just to like something over the other without having to justify it or putting down something else by comparison.

I agree with you about deifying anything or anyone for any reason. Human, all too human.

While the Monkees themselves were nothing special (only Nesmith could play an instrument even a little bit), the music they recorded was extremely well crafted, and their voices and looks were iconic. Were they "better" than the Beatles? It depends on how you look at it. They were different, certainly. Personally, I like the Monkees' voices better for the most part, but the Beatles were much better musicians. So, what's better, better voices, better singing, better command of the instruments, better writing???
