He's a great bassist. This is not funk music. The song is awful despite the great bass playing. Hey you asked...

As a fellow old white guy, I would tend to defer to others. But, I listen to a lot of funk and this ain't it. In my old age, it sounds like noise, more than anything. Even though Mono Neon is playing at a speed that appears inhuman. Amazing playing, but I won't be listening to this tune while I work.

I was wondering why Mono wasn’t playing his Fender. This video is from 6 yrs ago.

It always amazes me watching someone play bass upside down. He is obviously talented, but a very weird dude.
It's just too much for me. Even as a young white dude haha

I think it's cool. He's always moving forward and trying new stuff. I'll take this over some recycled familiarity any day. And he's a monster player.

Louis Cole is amazing and I've been following him for a while now. Mononeon also great but I haven't really heard much of his stuff. If he has a fender signature bass I'm assuming he's doing all right on the instrument.

I think the first clip sounded fine until the bass came in. That slap playing completely kills any potential this song might have had otherwise.
Interestingly enough, at 1:15 came in some chords and it was more pulled back and it was easier to actually get into the entire groove of the melody. But alas, crazy-overplaying came back at 1:21 so...
...there were only around 6 seconds of enjoyable bass playing in the song so far.
It gets better after that but it still loses me here and there - whatever genre it is, it's not for me. But the guy can totally play bass

Autechre and Aphex Twin, to name just two, make way groovier deconstructed music (of the numerous electronica variants) than this. He can surely play bass though.
On a zoom meeting haven't watch it yet but As an older brother I didn't see anything racist in the comments! I love heavy music but I'm no expert on all flavors of Death Metal but I can say if like the music before the dearth vader roar yelling starts LOL.

So, calling yourself "an old white guy" in a self deprecating manner makes you a racist? Even if you ARE an old white guy.
Much like that which determines swings, Funk is dependent on mid-tempos so the push-and-pull of what’s there and what’s not there is actually heard. The faster you play and the quicker the tempo is, the straighter it gets.
There’s obviously a place in the market for this kind of playing, but it really isn’t funky. This is NAMM show and guitar magazine/Youtube channel material.
They’ll be talking about “Hollywood Swinging”, “Shining Star”, “Not Just Knee Deep”, and “Licking Stick” 100 years from now because those tunes are funky and are the genuine article. Most of other stuff like this - not so much.
