Month sober, feels refreshing

I haven't drank in a month and I still have no clarity, determination, or motivation, I guess I'm just lazy :D

Congrats man, keep it up.

To be honest, it's affected me negatively too. I'm in a great mood and I have my mental clarity (which is huge to me, I always thought my spotty mind was due to a drug binge I went on a few years ago, it's nice to know I'm fully coming back from all of that). But I am also physically tired where I haven't been before, it's hard keeping up on my house maintenance and I think the lack of alcohol is definitely playing a factor. When I used to clean, I'd pound beer after beer while cleaning to keep me in a good mood. Come to think of it, I used alcohol to enhance a lot of my good times, and make things I didn't want to do seem better.

**** -- maybe I was an alcoholic and didn't realize it

I was tired a lot at first too. I would sleep for 12 hour stretches sometimes. That went away eventually, exercise helped.

I was a mess for my first couple of months sober. I was really happy but dingy as a small rowboat. I totalled a car, lost a job etc. But I didn't care.

Ain't that the truth.

It took me a year to get 60 days sober and I was such an emotional mess, I cried at cat food commercials. Then I got mad at a woman I was trying to coerce into dating me and got drunk.

My "allergy to alcohol" caused me to break out in handcuffs. That time ended with half of the PPD looking for me for a whole day, catching me, an attempt at "suicide by cop" by pointing my cell phone at them, three days under suicide watch wearing a giant canvas bib (that made me want to off myself even more), and charges of menacing, disturbing the peace, drunk driving, and nearly charged with attempted murder.

The cell phone pointing part ended funny. I was surrounded by a dozen cruisers in the middle of an intersection, and one cop was smiling and had a shotgun leveled at my head. I asked "is there bean bags in that?"

He said yes, so I hit the pavement. I wanted to die, not get a bad bruise.

I can relate. Not nearly on that level but let's just say that my life was dominated by chaos with similar parallels. And how common a story like yours actually is!

Glad you're sober bro.

Keep up the good work. I've been clean and sober for 14 years, so it can be done.

This isn't the first time I've realized I had a problem with substances. I used to have a pretty serious pill problem back in the day, used to pop adderal and ecstasy almost every night for about 6 months, and periodically for another 6 or so months after that. I was functional though so I didn't care.

When I lost my job due to unrelated circumstances, I ended up homeless for a few nights. Found a temp job through Michigan Works and worked my way up to being a software developer/IT specialist. My friend let me rent out her basement/a bedroom for a few years while I got myself back on my feet. Biked 22 miles round trip to and from work every day until I could afford a moped. Rode the moped till I could afford my 03 Taurus, which I'm still driving.

3 years later I'm leaving development for an IT management position that opened up within the company. I'm renting my own house and I'm doing incredibly well for myself considering I'm a 24 year old college dropout. I'm actually supposed to be finishing up my last week this week on our product development team. I've been worse off, but I'm still slowly realizing the dangers of being a functional abuser. All I know is I don't want to fall back into despair and lose the opportunities I've been given. I built myself from the ground up (literally) once, I don't think I have what it takes to do it again.

Haven't been stoned or drunk in almost a month. Haven't been sober this long since I was 19 (going on 6 years). It's amazing how much clarity, determination, and motivation comes back when you aren't stoned stupid or drunk 80% of the time.

Feels good to shout that I finally feel alive again :smug:

Keep it up man, it only gets better! I've been sober for almost a year and a half. I would've been sober for over six years by now if I would've stuck to what I should've been doing. But it's in the past. Today is what matters.

Now you'll have more money for gear and GAS attacks!! Hehe :hiding:

Long timer here. I never had a drinking or drug problem, but I discovered early on that I enjoy being sober way more than I enjoy being drunk, stoned, tripping, etc.

People seem to look at me funny when they discover I don't drink and I'm neither a recovering alcoholic or religious. "I just don't drink" isn't an answer they are used to getting.

Most people just don't get it. That's the way it is. If you would've told me that 15 years ago I would've understood. I get it now though. Regardless of me being in recovery. I get it. It's hard to comprehend for most. I use to be one of them. A lot of years and exp taught me otherwise.

What I don't get is sippers. Someone who has a beer and takes a little sip here and there an keeps setting it down. I never understood that. I want to yell at them "WILL YOU JUST DRINK THAT! WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?" :p

I liked those people. They left almost full beers for me to drink the next morning. However, I drank many of those without looking and unfortunately swallowed ash instead.

Oh man I can't remember how many times I did that!! I remember when I use to drink on stage and the waitress where we gigged a lot of the time would keep bringing me beers while we played but wouldn't take the empties. Well, I'd smoke too. And put my butts in those bottles forgetting which ones on a dark stage. Yeah, try swallowing a mouth full of ash and piss beer while you're playing and your stomach is twisting about to blow it all out. Yeah.

The gag feeling kicks right in. I know it well. Especially when you are already struggling and hung over the next morning.
