Month sober, feels refreshing

I've dried out a few times over the last few years. I think many of the semi-pro drinkers who just hit it hard one night a week fail to realize that the subtler effects of a hangover actually last three or four days, leaving your mind a bit slower and cloudier.

When you drink hard, you only completely waste the next day, but the next three aren't going to be as productive as they could have been either.

Extra kudos for avoiding habitual smoking. From all my observations, it usually takes a couple of months to see the full effect, but stopping has always produced a huge benefit to short term memory and general focus for my friends.

The first few years I started seriously committing to music, I would never play a "sober" show or rehearsal. Having a buzz on went hand in hand with playing. It really got to the point where the lines started to blur and music became a second to making sure I was well lubricated. Eventually that crept into other aspects of my life...I thought I needed to feel a certain way to perform to the standards I was used to because that's how I had always done it.

To keep it brief, I made some life changes and am basically rediscovering my musical life from a fresh viewpoint and its very exciting. It's almost like I starting over and getting another chance. What's the saying? If I knew then what I know now...

It feels like I just started getting into music...but with much better chops! The best analogy I can come up with is being able to inhabit your younger physical self with the wisdom and chops that can only be gained from experience. Again, it's an exciting time for me musically.

I am the definition of habitual smoker. I find that smoking helps me keep on track most times though. I don't like to get stoned anymore, usually I'll pack a deep bowl and it'll last me a couple days. I smoke to relax and to ease stress, but I don't like being stoned stupid. It helps me find my creative roots, especially when writing music, but if I'm near-comatose and tripping out, I can barely even play my instrument. Getting stoned as a goat all the time instead of chasing a mild, relaxing high is when I start to have short term memory issues as well. It's all about moderation for me when it comes to smoking.

I'd rather weed be legalized than have alcohol legal. I'd take that trade off in a heartbeat. At least smoking a jib jab now and again helps keep me off cigs
