Moon Owners Club

OK,this is probably going to be a really small club, but Moon Basses are great and they deserve some recognition.
So I guess I'm #1.
Here's my 1998 JB-5 with Nordies and an Aguilar OBP1 preamp

Anyone else here who plays a Moon Bass?

I don't think I have seen those SWR ads.
Here's the story of this bass.I think it was made in 1998. I've had the bass for a while, bought it from a friend years ago. It had some setup, fretbuzz, clacking issues that I just didn't know how to fix, which is why it sat in the closet for a long time. I was going to sell it so I messed around with action, relief etc to get it as good as possible for the next owner.
To my surprise I was actually able to really dial it in perfectly, so now I am getting reacquainted with it.This is really a great bass and for the music I'm playing these days it sounds just right. So I decided I'm keeping it.
I don't know much about the company. I read somewhere that later they were made in larger numbers by a company that also made Schecter guitars. I don't know if that is true. The serial # 634 is written by hand in the neck pocket also there is a date, so it seems like this one was a hand-built instrument. The logo is slightly different from what it looks like on their current line of basses.
Yes, Larry plays one but I don't like his tone that much. Too harsh. I read that Randy Hope Taylor from Incognito plays one and Pino supposedly also has a Moon bass.

I do! ...play a Moon J -5, that is. Mine is also late '90's and maybe this thread will inspire me to figure out how to post pics on here ...not a skill so far. I recently put it up for sale and shortly took it back down again. The Yamaha I picked up is a wonderful bass but I missed my Moon. Gigs I've gotten lately will be keeping it a lot busier. One of the great unknowns here in the US; most of the interest in mine was from overseas. Thanks for coming up with this idea of a club.

Hey Tom,
Good to know there are more Moons out there.I'd love to see yours and this is how you get a picture on here. How did you get your bass? Is it a 34" or a 35"? 17mm spacing?
Go to Photobucket.com sign up for an account (it's free) and then upload your pictures into your own photo album on that site. You can even edit the images from within that site if you like.
Once you are there, you open the image you want to post here.
On the right of the image you will see four choices. Select IMG and copy the code into your talkbass message.
You can select preview in talkbass and you will see how the picture is going to look.
That's all there is to it.Good luck!

I could be wrong but it seems American brand basses are available in almost all countries. But international brand basses (Moon, Sandberg, etc.) are rarely available in the US. Is it the company not wanting to sell in the US?

Here's my JJ-5. Bought it in mint condition, used, a number of years ago. Have never been able to date it. It's a great bass with the Moon Blackbird Preamp.

The build quality couldn't be better. Just the best. Check my profile to see the other basses I'm comparing it to. The image absolutely doesn't do it justice.

JJ, 1991, padauk with maple & ebony. Still my main bass after 22 years of many very nice acquisitions. Can't say enough good things about it.

JB, built-to-order fretless with Randy Hope Taylor model electronics. Deep metallic green, pau ferro fingerboard with fret lines made out of the same wood. Also a very nice instrument.

Both of these are worth more than I paid for them in terms of sound and playability.

This is interesting. When I bought mine through the Luthier's Access Group, I got the impression that custom ordering was very difficult due to the language barrier; eventually LAG just gave up, even though they still believe they're incredible instruments. It sounds like you had a different experience & outcome...

I don't know anything about the Randy Hope Taylor model. What is special or different about it?

As of last week, I'm the proud and happy owner of a Moon bass with serial number LG0002. It's a Larry Graham signature model, and according to the seller it's the second one of a new batch they made this year. Number LG0001 belongs to mr. Graham himself!
If this is true, it would make this bass even more special to me! I have used it twice in a live situation, and I can't get over how nice this bass is. Low action (for me) without any string rattle, and a huge and very present sound without getting in the way of anything else. I put LaBella flats on it, like Pino does, and i can totally see why!
