More than 1 bass, but does not...

Sorry, this is the only group photo I have on photobucket at the moment. It's one I've used here before. For some strange reason, I couldn't upload photos today. The American Standard (not pictured) looks the same as the Mexi, but with a lighter neck and different bridge. I will try again later on. For now, here are my original 4-Horsemen

I know that 4 Fender Jazz basses may seem redundant to some, But to me each one is different. The even feel different when I play them. The 24 is really the black sheep. but it gets love all the same. The Geddy has a wonderful maple fretboard and the Mexi is my daily driver. The MIA Jazz is so much lighter than the rest. The deluxe P is just a beast and I have named her "The Bear" after my evil killer Shi-Tzu (RIP).

I'm a hobbyist, former pro at a low level. I have somewhere around 7 basses and only really play my Sadowsky.... still I prefer not to sell the others for a variety of reasons. Some of them were my main bass previously and we made a lot of great music together. One is a fretless and once in a while it's nice to be free of the frets... One's my backup 5... etc.

Currently, I fit the criteria of this thread. I had up to 5 at one point. I just recently gave one to a local thrift store.

Soon, (when I stop procrastinating:rolleyes:) Im going get rid of three more. Id rather they where being played, insted of collecting dust. I have my Lakland, and thats all I need/play. Eventually, that will be replaced by my dream bass(Lakland 4-94 standard, natural with black block, and bound inlay.):bassist: When all is said and done, I might keep my 44-02 for backup. It would be nice to have a Lakie with Barts around if the mood strikes me.

At that point im going to try like hell to refrain from gas attacks, and stick to playing.

I have a guitar player friend who does not (can not) play with a band - he forgets songs easily, but is actually pretty talented tone-wise. He just has a defective brain. :) Anyway he plays all the time, by himself, Anyway, he has 17 guitars.

I have four, A TBC 5 string quilt top EBMM HH clone, an OLP MM-style 5er, an ESP/LTD fretless 5. The fourth, a Douglas 6 string just arrived via UPS truck while I was at work today. At $110, I hope it plays decently. It will either be the cheapest decent bass I ever bought new, or moderately expensive wall hanging...

I have 16 guitars. 4 of them basses.

Gene Simmons Punisher - I got when I played in KISS Tributes
HomemadeAXE Bass - that I built so I wasn't spitting blood on a expensive guitar
Fender Precision/w EMGs - Records great, plays like butter
Schecter Stilletto custom 4 - light as a feather and great to play

I use them all except the AXE which I plan to EBAY soon.

I have a rule that if I see a good deal I buy it even if I don't need it. That's way I can have decent gear without spending a fortune.

Instruments are like tools to me. I only buy and play ones that are useful and play great. BRAND is not a consideration. NONE of them are dust collectors.

Oh dude, I wish I had the economy for doing that, I find bargains all the time, sweep ad sites and ebay several times a day, and there's lots of candy for not that many golden coins out there, but atm I am not in the situation to spread em wide ...

But I agree in full there, useful tools are worth loooots more than expensive grails.

I've been playing for 28 years and NEVER have gigged and only started working with other musicians this past winter.
I now own 3 basses for the first time in YEARS and they all offer something different.
I have:
92 Carvin LB-75
07 ESP-LTD B-404SM
08 Clement Custom.

All are fretted and all are active BUT the Carvin is my 5er and the ESP and Clement have VERY different voices and feels. The Clement has a Duncan 1/4 Pounder P and a Duncan MM with a Bart pre and the ESP features all-EMG electronics. The Clement just arrived last Thursday and I have not yet fully explored the tonal possibilities but I already know the 1/4 Pounder is very impressive.
I'll post pics when I find the time to take a couple "family portraits"

Haven't played a gig on bass in more than 2 years. 2 small children and a home based business have dug into my free time pretty much. This fall, I will look again for a band.

If I see something I like, that feels good, sounds good, or something I've been G.A.S.ing for, I buy it. Haven't gigged in years but still love to hear, see, play bass! Was up to 13 at one point, but am down to 6 at the moment: :bassist:

I guess I can represent the lower end of the spectrum (age-wise) as I'm just in my 20's, don't gig or play professionally, and the band I'm in doesn't play enough to be considered really a band... (can't remember the last time we played).

Anyway, at one point in time I had in my arsenal:

peavey t40, sx jazz, olp mm3, and an ibanez fretless.

I thought that was too much, especially since all the basses had either upgrades I wanted to do to em', or needed some TLC, or both.

Got rid of the fretless, defretted the mm3 which was nice, but got rid of that as well.

Currently just have the jazz and the t40, a 6 string will soon be joining the family, and I might swap a fretless neck on the jazz. I don't like going over 3 basses b/c I feel I can cover all tonal variations and options I need to with just that amount. Besides, I can't carry em' all to band practice with the amps too... just too much work.

Two basses, only been in like two bands, and in none atm.

I don't ever play the second one. I got it for Christmas because I thought I liked it, but I just can't tweak a good tone out of it. It's always too honky or too scooped or to thin or too boomy or something. :|

I guess I'm at the other end of the spectrum with 3 basses (aside from the ABG and upright bass), and I gig or rehearse 3 to 4 times a week. Therefore I use my tools.

However, I see nothing wrong with collecting basses for pleasure (not necessarily for value). If I had to stop gigging I'd still like to have a few basses for home playing because they give me pleasure. There are much more expensive hobbies (think golf, motor racing, etc) than music and instrument gathering.

I've three, and two of them are sixers. One has been defretted, and they have different pickups. In the future, I hope to have built several additional basses. As of yet, I'm not a gigging or recording player. I can't write songs to save my life.

I've grown a wee bit tired of people ranting about how having more than one bass (and it has to be a four-string, passive, 20-fret bass at that) is excessive, pointless, and appalling. And yes, I have heard this.
