Morningstar ML5X MIDI loop switcher

The ability to split the any of stereo loops into a separate pair on mono loops is a seriously cool feature. It means that I can run 4 stereo loops and 2 mono loops, move them about in the chain. Plus I can put similar Midi controlled pedals in a single loop and switch between them via Midi CC/PC. My Aftershock and Ultrawave are always run mono. I could put them in a single Mono loop and switch via Midi. In the other mono loop I could put my EHX Hog2. All the other loops would then be Stereo. C4, H9, Spectrum and Lunar...very sweet. Everything after my Lunar is static in terms of chain placement. So my EQ2>Nemesis>H9 (2) doesn't ever need to be placed differently in my chain and I can switch on/off via midi.

Transitioning from a Boss ES-5 is going to be a bit of a headache, it all works and is currently working well. Adding a MC6 and a ML5x and recreating the loops and midi messages per patch is going to be a mammoth task. So I might add a MS ML5x first and then swap out the Boss ES-5 for a MS MC6 later next year.

If you read the MS forum post, you’ll see that it’s actually 3 stereo loops and two mono loops.

So from what i'm reading from you cats is:

1) ML5x differs from the ML5 by having access to stereo loops vs the mono loops of the ML5.
Stereo benefitting pedals like Source Audio pedals (which have stereo in and out)
2) Both ML5 and ML5x have the capability to move pedal order in the chain.
3) Is just 4mm taller than the original ML5 (wow thats nice)

Am I reading right about the ability to do parallel blends and splitting/summing? But no phase corrections?

Do the Boss ES8 and 5 do phase inversion?

To the first paragraph, I don't know honestly. Not trying to be critical. Just curious. It *could* come up as an issue in some setups.

On the second, just confirming if I was interpreting it right...

I bought one of these to solve that issue with my ML5: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Just a simple buffer with a phase inversion that I can put inline with a problem fuzz. (I was running a parallel clean signal around the ML5)

I’ve never used the Boss stuff so wasn’t sure, though don’t remember seeing anything in the manual which said it did.

So yes, one stereo split/sum and no phase inversion capability. As James said, there was only so much space for hardware on a board this size. If there’s ever a bigger version (and I hope there will be) then phase inversion and gain controls would be possible.

I wasn’t sure if that was public knowledge yet, hence my not saying. As it happens, I’ve just sent my test unit back today to be upgraded to the 5x stereo version so should have that back in a couple of weeks for the next round of testing.
