Most obscure cover you've ever done

I first played this song when it came out in 1984 and people liked it. My current band plays it and people really get into it. Quite often, somebody will ask what is the name of the song and who did it. We even get requests for it now.

I've played Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" in a punk band in a punk club circa 1980, it went over fairly well as it went over the heads of the crowd, although as it's a 'Syd' song, with all the slashing power chords and downward chromatic riff, it was fairly punky in the first place. Also once did a cover of one of the more obscure tunes by the biggest band ever...


I swear that someone in the crowd came up to me later and asked if it was by the Ventures.

Yeah, I had never seen the video until about 3 months ago. Bear in mind that if MTV was on in the 80’s at my house, it was because of Headbanger’s Ball. So, to me this is obscure.

For extra special gigs, we used to commission a fantastic keyboard player, with sound processors, that sounded like a ten piece horn band. He knew and sang more songs, than our lead singer, and we all hated him because he demanded more money for his cut, or he would not play. His library of songs astounded us all. He even demanded a set to himself, but he made us sound like the NBC late night band.

I have very mainstream tastes, but I recently recordeded a cover of an ending credits theme from an obscure 80s sci-fi movie. There are three copies of it on Youtube, adding up to less than 4000 total views. That's slightly less than a song I used to play with an originals band which was never recorded or released, but it does have one live video. I covered that one with two more bands later, but it only gets second place. I've also done some obscure Canadian alt-R&B songs by Rochelle Jordan, and some Ugandan dancehall, but those are hugely popular by comparison - we're talking tens of thousands of views.

So, here's the original, very big hair. It's really quite a good song, it was just trapped at the very end of an obscure movie that few people watched all the way through.



And the electronic version I did with a couple of other people.



But I'm sure others have covered much more obscure stuff. So, let's do some deep digging for lost gems. What's the most deeply obscure cover anyone here has played live or recorded?

Once on a bet I covered a terrible original song by a guy who couldn't play or sing worth a damn at an open mic right before he was going to get up and do it.
He did the same song every week, badly, and my buddy who was the sound guy wanted to mess with him.
Songwriter guy was sort of confused as to whether to be flattered or insulted. I bought him a beer and some chicken wings with my winnings.

Duke Jupiter, obscure, but a drinking crowd likes it

Duke Jupiter was from my hometown of Rochester, NY. They were supposed to be the next "Journey," but never quite got there.

Edit: After listening to those Duke Jupiter songs again, I have no idea how anybody thought they resembled Journey. Sounds more like ZZTop to me.

"Back of My Hand" by the Jags. It was a popular song in the dance clubs for a couple of minutes during the early eighties. It was one of my favorites and is replete with hooks. You might know it by the lyric: "I got your number written on the back of my hand" (I loved that I got to sing lead vocals). During the late 70's I was in a band that played a song called "Amnesia" by the Pousette Dart Band and "So Long" by Henry Paul (formerly of the Outlaws). We had some very tight vocals and very decent voices. I was also in a band that played a segue between two songs off Queen's "The Game" album: "Ooh I Need Your Loving" and "Dragon Attack" which had a really cool short bass solo. Also, Joe Jackson's "Baby Stick Around".

I played Amnesia by Pousette Dart Band in a band back in the early 80s. We also played Dragon Attack by Queen in the same band.
