Gonna be releasing a metal/hard rock cover of Nick Jonas' "Chains". It already has great pop structure, so really all that was needed was a much heavier sound and some background screams

Not as obscure as most, but one of the first bands I was in did Killer Girls off of Quiet Riot II.
We also did Teaser by Tommy Bolin. Then Motley Crue did it and it wasn't so obscure any more

I feel like obscure can be a subjective term. But in my covers band we are really into some artists who are far from main stream. So we cover stuff from the following who may not be household names to your average bar audience:
Tommy Castro
Susan Tedeschi
Janiva Magness
Alejandro Escovedo
There are others but we tend do you a few tunes buy these guys and people really seem to dig them.

Stuff I was doing in the early 80's... to me it was great but was obscure for the people where we were performing across Canada who didn't know us, but it was a great time let me tell you...

"Back of My Hand" by the Jags. It was a popular song in the dance clubs for a couple of minutes during the early eighties. It was one of my favorites and is replete with hooks. You might know it by the lyric: "I got your number written on the back of my hand" (I loved that I got to sing lead vocals). During the late 70's I was in a band that played a song called "Amnesia" by the Pousette Dart Band and "So Long" by Henry Paul (formerly of the Outlaws). We had some very tight vocals and very decent voices. I was also in a band that played a segue between two songs off Queen's "The Game" album: "Ooh I Need Your Loving" and "Dragon Attack" which had a really cool short bass solo. Also, Joe Jackson's "Baby Stick Around".
I played one gig with a band that covered" That's the Way of the World" by a punk band called Flipper. We also did "Stealing Peoples' Mail" by the Dead Kennedys. Both tunes you don't hear on your ex-girlfriend's iPod...
not sure how obscure it is, but i sang and played air from hair with a project. no one in the audience had heard it before... and i did ham it up just a little by having a fake coughing fit at the end

So, not obscure but I'm sure rarely covered because they're widely despised... have any of you metal guys covered songs from, say, "Cold Lake" or any of those infamous albums?
Take Away My Pain by Dream Theater. Not all that obscure per se, but this was at a pub in Kolkata, India, so not the most obvious choice

...mid-'90s, I audition for an "originals" band. I ask if they do any covers & they say "...we do one cover but you've never heard of it".
Well, I actually knew it. I knew it 'cause Oteil Burbridge was in ARU. Oteil had been playing in Va. Beach in the '80s...once he left the area, I lost track until a friend told me about ARU. So I ran out & bought the two ARU albums with Oteil. Our cool record store (Birdland Records) actually had both cds in-stock.
Anyway, we always opened with "Egos"...everyone just assumed it was one of our own tunes.
