Yes, the word Karma has been used to a ridiculous extreme just this past week alone!
I understand the colloquial sense in which people have been using it, but it happens to be a peeve of mine.

Karma does not actually equate to "what goes around comes around" and I just :scowl: when people say things like "Karma is a bitch".

The true rewards of Karma are not returned to us in this life, but in all future existences, and unless one believes in the immortality of the soul, Karma isnt necessarily something one should use to set boundries for your personal ethics.

Are you speaking of Karma as understood by Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, Spiritsm, New Age, in Falung Gong, or the Western Interpretation?

Because the Western Interpretation most certainly is "What goes around comes around," and is a pretty fair deviation from the "law of cause and effect" principles of Eastern religions.

I have always viewed Karma as a condition of the Universe, in which actions will indeed come back to haunt you, in this lifetime. I do not have a belief in previous or future lives. That is not to say I have a DISBELIEF in any of that; only to say that it is not a large part of my belief system.

It can become very difficult to maintain what is correct or incorrect when a phrase or word gets adopted into popular culture, because whatever the word or phrase originally meant, the word NOW means what is meant by the culture expressing it.

So I maintain the argument that Karma, more or less DOES mean "What goes around comes around," simply because the masses have adopted this meaning.

And thats a valid argument. As a student of the Universe whose philosophy is heavily based on Eastern Doctrine I reject that adopted meaning. For me, it trivializes the true power of Karma when its used in the sense of "poetic justice" as AfroCuban so put it in another thread. If it helps others be more ethical in their actions then by all means may people use it to their desired end.

The argument, in itself, reminds me much of a similar topic thats been discussed many a time on TB, the bastardization of language, when it comes to words such as ********, or gay. Taken my stance on the subject, I should probably lighten up in my role as 'Karma Police'. ;)

I first learned of karma when I studied Hindi, where it derives from the word "karna" which just means "to do". So karma really is just an "act" or "action", in that sense. I always find it helpful to go to the source language (actually Sanskrit or maybe Pali - but Hindi is close) when it comes to philosophical terms, as they often become altered in the borrowing from language to language.

I'd like to expound on this, but the direction it would take me is out of TB's realm of acceptable discourse, so I'll just have to say yes. I'll just say that its not only terms that need be traced back to their origins.

With my limited understanding of eastern culture, I would think most people actually mean Kizmet when they say/type Karma.


My over-used list:
"Mis-matched cabs" - just let them waste their money. I did, that's how I learned what works and what doesn't when I refused to listen to wiser heads.
"Do a search" - no, I want to ask it again.

I like to see IMO on occasion, as a reminder that some folks don't post their opinion as if it were a fact. Now just sayin', that's really useless.;)
