Most pickups on a bass. the low down.

Doesn't bootsy have another with a load of P style pickups?
Oh yeah about the 9 pickups, not that I'm jumpin on the band waggon, but it sounds to me like the sience is against it. However that doesn't stop me wishing the guy the best of luck. Its more than I've ever done and would like to see the pics when he's ready

Sounds like a lot of fun. Loads of pickups! but it also sounds like excess for the sake of excess, pointless as a hot dog eating competition

you never seen the bass luthier lowenbrauw (writing?). There's like 16 pickups in his basses. Stanley Clark is one of their endorsee
 
I had a bass made completely out of bass pickups, including the neck and headstock. The back of the bass was made from 9 volt batteries that powered the rest of the bass.
I tried to take pictures, but the powerful magnetic pull of the bass ruined any attempt to take a digital photo. And my standard camera was unable to focus because the magnets were pulling the aperature out of whack.

Ha, I built a bass made completely out of pickups, INCLUDING the back of the bass. But those pickups were facing inward and the outside of the back was layered with a spray-on rubber coating. This is because I made special "active" strings that ACTUALLY ARE PICKUPS themselves. I powered mine straight from the household 110v AC, via a pair of grounded cables with an adaptor at the end that fits in your standard double 3-prong wall outlet. The other end plugs into two sockets on the bass-- one next to the instrument cable jack (for the bass body pickups) and one into the bottom of the bridge (which is also a pickup) for the "active" powered strings. Oh yeah, there are 5 parametric EQs onboard (and yes, they all have pickups in them themselves), illuminated VU meters along the side of the body so you can constantly monitor the power distribution throughout the bass, three slider controls (with built-in pickups) for (1) overall volume, (2) spread/pattern (a little like 'Q' on a parametric equalizer) which determines how wide of an spread of pickups you want powered from headstock to piezo-tailpiece (which has its own balanced quadrophonic output, BTW, and is connected to the six piezo tuning machines in the headstock) with a multi-level push-pull feature to select different patterns of pickup selection (3) central location of the spread/pattern (when spread/pattern is full open, this slider does nothing because the whole bass is powered). There's also a 5-switch off-on bank to select which zones of the bass you want powered. The frets and fret markers are all illuminatable multichromatic LEDs that are controlled by a multi-feature remote (with full QWERTY keypad) that you can clip on to your strap. With this feature, you can have a scrolling digital marquee (like the Goodyear blimp!) on the neck of the bass.

You need to wear a rubber suit while playing this beast, lest you electrocute yourself. But such is a small sacrifice in the pursuit of GREAT TONE! And you should see the pyrotechnics that ensue should you play while standing in a Farraday cage...

P.S. I don't have any pics yet because the EMP generated when I plugged this thing in for the first time fried my digital camera.
 
I think current technology is 7.1 surround, you better do 9 if you want to get a patent.

Thats an interesting thought. I never thought you could technically record each pickup into a different channel like that. To do that though youd really need to have like 7 of the same pickups, then something wierder and dubby to pick up the .1. They do have 9.1 systems but i think its overkill. This idea does intrigue me though.
 
Just to clarify, it's Loewenherz. Below are pics of a 12 (ebony) and 6 (maple) PUP instruments. The 12 PUP one is one of my favorite that i have seen in a while. I think it is interesting how all of the PUPs were integrated into one large finger ramp. All of the PUPs have thier own on/off switch. I htink these are pretty cool basses. I am sure that they are WAY out of my range but they do have a lot of PUPs and i think that was the point of this thread.

Not quite as many as the OP had described but i htink this one is pretty damn cool. I guess Derek Smalls has one up on Bootsy.
Funny you bring this one up. I heard that only four of the pickups on that bass are actually operational. Phase cancellation and wiring issues made it too difficult to run all six, I believe.

It's awesome nonetheless :D, but makes me doubt the feasibility of the OP's design.
