Can someone please recommend a song by Opeth and Mastodon that showcases their ability? I have listened to the stuff on their MySpace and it doesn't impress me. It doesn't help that I don't like their music.
I don't like Tool, but I can definitely hear that they are a talented band. My style has been compared Justin Chancellor on many occasions, so of course I would agree
I would say BTBAM and Radiohead are the two most talented bands around today. Thom Yorke's songwriting has improved exponentially over the years, then add to that every awesome member of Radiohead... BUHUHUHUH

Hmm.. I'd say Opeth's Blackwater Park and Ghost of Perdition. I haven't really heard much of Mastodon..

They're all talented, it's part of why they are who (and where) they are. But just to go along, I'd pick Rush.
lets start the other way around and find a conclusion. so at at the bottom is super awesome........my very special favorite..... JONAS BROTHERS BAND!!
Hm... some bands are good at this... some are good at that.
I think "Oregon" is (still) pretty talented
That's some really cool stuff, I've seen Glenn play solo before at a couple of bass conventions but not with this group. wow.
i think that everyone pretty much has a different perception of what talent is so this thread seems strange to me but i will chime in with bands i dig that are very technically proficient (being that i think that's what this thread is actually about anyways

exivious and cynic (although i prefer sean malone on bass)
anything gary willis is in (triphasic, slaughterhouse, etc...)
pat metheny band (always incredible lineups and chemistry)
chick corea (always amazing very much in the same way metheny's bands are)
psycroptic (gets my vote for extreme metal stuff)
opeth (great live band, solid musicianship across the board)
so many dynamos (great live sound, very inventive songwriters, imaginative mix of indie and progressive rock)
maps and atlases (flurries of two handed tapping riffs and interesting ideas all over the place, very complex indie stuff)

most talented group would IMO have to either be jazz or a jamband. anyone can rehearse speedy guitar solos.. improvisation and communicating with other band members is what the most talented musicians excel in.. i think so, atleast.
