Most Underrated Bassists

Victor Wooten.

Yeah I know, I know you're saying whaaatt??

Guys probably the best bass player alive - maybe the best bass player that ever lived... but try mentioning his name at a party. NOBODY has heard of the guy. Evan a shocking number of bass players have never heard of the guy. Maybe not here at talk bass - but elsewhere you get a big Victor who?

Duff McKagan- GnR (underated by all who don't listen to him lol)

Mike Inez and Mike Starr- (both of) Alice in Chains

How about Billy Gould from Faith No More?

+10000 to all these guys. Sweet Child O'Mine wouldn't be the same without Duff; Would? and Rooster without Mike Starr; From Out of Nowhere without Billy.

I'd like to thrown in Hunter (AFI), Victor Daimiani and Gabe Nelson (Cake), Rex Brown (Pantera), and my bass heroes... Simon Gallup (The Cure) and Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order)

Here's someone that always intrigued me: Richard Hudson
He was in Strawbs back in the mid 60's-mid 70's, but I had never heard of him until...
The Monks - Bad Habits (1979). Pretty silly stuff, but there's some great bass on that record. I still listen to it and it always makes me smile. Give it a listen.

Not reading all the thread, but..
Dan Adriano - Alkaline Trio.
The guy from Deep Purple.
Sting (some of his stuff is boringly simple, but he knew his role and filled it extremely well.)
Mark Hoppus - He actually wrote some nice lines back in the early days.
The guy from The Beach Boys.
The guy from Grateful Dead.

I feel like such an ass for forgetting so many names, but it's 4am and I'm tired! /rant.

305 posts on a bass forum and no Mick Karn. I must be getting old or he really is truly underated. In 1980 i had never heard anything like his playing.[/url]

Yes, a remarkable bassist indeed. RIP, dear Mick.

richtea, you should listen to Percy Jones' work with Brand X. Karn often mentioned him as his biggest influence. When you hear what J does on a fretless Wal you'll know why Karn sounds the way he does and who the biggest underrated bassist ever really is ;)

Just did a quick YouTube search. There is no doubt about the style/ technique influence, not to mention the inimitable WAL tone. Percy Jones was previously unknown to me. Thanks for taking the time to post, another great bassist to listen to and hopefully learn from,:D:D:D:D:D

You're very welcome. I'm glad if I can make a great bassists a bit less underrated ;)

Just two tracks - but his unique style and impressive phrasing can be heard on any Brand X album.

Brand X - Dance of the Illegal Aliens - YouTube

1979. Their 5th album.

Brand X - True to the Click - YouTube

1997. BTW, I think he plays Ibanez Ergodyne 5 on this album, Fender P on the first 3, Wal Mk1 and Mk2 5 on all others.... I think ;)

Cheers!

With all the trash that came out of the 80's there were still a number of amazing bass players. Roger Taylor from Duran Duran. Tiny Weymouth, (played with Brian Eno early) who juggled schedules with both David Byrne/Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club.

I may be a lousy reader but I haven't seen Leigh Gorman mentioned from Bow Wow Wow. Everyone has heard I Want Candy. But if you dig around a bit there are some gems.

So very little quality sound samples made it to to the net. Try finding Go Wild, Chihuahua, Prince of Darkness, Louis Cortez, you'll find some incredible phrasing and unique choices for fills.

And before any of you start slobbering when you see Annabella Lewin, she was 14-15 during Bow Wow Wow's heyday so tippy toe ! :D

Brandi Wynne from Ozric Tentacles.

With a good cup of tea, of course :)
