Most Underrated Bassists

U2's Rattle and Hum was on Palladia yesterday. It seems like it has been 15+ years since I last watched the 1988 film capturing U2's U.S. Stadium tour. I have a little practice amp next to my couch and decided to play along while I was watching...I was mesmerized by the elegant simplicity of Adam Clayton's basslines and the gorgous tone of what appeared to be an old vintage P-Bass. I am including Adam Clayton here not because he is an under the radar shredder, but because he is quite the opposite actually...the consumate team player that just locks in with the drummer in a manner that allows the melodic elements of the band, Bono and The Edge in this case, to shine. He also crafts incredibly hooky basslines...sometimes out of only 2 notes...'Bullet the Blue Sky' for example. My contribution to this thread is to recognize Adam Clayton of U2 as a crucial part of the DNA and Chemistry of one of the worlds largest rock bands...and I am a funk guy at heart.

Tom Jenkinson/Squarepusher.

Why?

Most of his fans are electronic music fans. While they understand and are aware that he plays electric bass it is still an afterthought to many.

P-Nut from 311. They get grouped in with trl late 90s mtv hype and he doesn't get talked about much.

Tony Levin, Steve Harris, Duff McKagan.

I'm not sure, but I suspect having an artist series Fender or Squier in your name might be a disqualifier for being considered underrated. In fact at least one who's name appears in that product line is most certainly overrated.

Berlin is the man...albeit a raving theory snob...but...he has a point... and he proves it aplomb.

... but is he underrated?
he seems to rate himself rather highly and so do many many others I think. Not to say that he isn't very good.
So, if I'd have to come up with a list of bassists whom I thought are NOT under-rated, he would most certainly be on it.
