I live in FL, you can't throw a rock without hitting one. From automotive paint stores to speed shops.

There is even more hot-rod builders, I know about 8 off the top of my head and they are all really good at what they do.

We got a couple small shops in town, and some guys who build hot rods in their garages. If I needed some parts for a hot rod, I could get them in town.

We had one in Waco years ago, (Super Shops) The only place in town where you could walk out the door with an Erson cam and Mickey Thompson Sportman tires. Now there are a couple of small shops that mostly do performance machine work, they can order you the stuff but who can't? Autozone, Advance, Orielly, and Pepboys carry mild performance stuff too. I would think it would be hard for a smaller shop to compete with the mail order places prices, the demand in our area should be pretty good since we have a big Dirt track and Drag strip both of which do fairly well.

I think there's still one I know in the Chicago burbs that I went to many years ago. I think they mostly survive because they do a lot of custom work and have a full on machine shop.

But yeah, definitely long gone are the days storefront speed shop. There's too many different types of cars and parts and diverse tastes that it's just not possible. Back in the day, you had your muscle cars with common setups that just about everyone used, it was much simpler to keep stuff in stock.

I've seen many 'rice' shops come and go over the years as well. Even the high end 'stereo' shops are long gone.

I've bought hop up parts online for over 10 years now and never looked back. Most places had to order what I wanted anyways and then jack up the price... Cheaper to get it direct to me.
