Moving Away From REAPER

To the OP -
I bought v3, and got hit again at the V5 release.. I renewed about 2 weeks ago.
Everything that worked with v4 is still working with v5... as far as I know.
I have the lame and Mp3pro codecs and they seem to be working fine...
Not noticed any other issues you alluded to.. was on Win7x64 and now Win10x64 - but I run both 32 AND 64-bit versions.

I closed a deal on a Mac Mini with the upgraded i5 proc, Intel Iris graphics, 8GB of RAM, and the 1TB hdd. Runs pretty well, I got $100 off at Micro Center and they let you upgrade to El Capitan for free (in the app store). They had a mediocre monitor on sale, 27" AOC, so I grabbed one of those and since I'm not doing graphic work it does fine.

Seems like it doesn't run as fast as my previous one on boot up, but that could just be how fast my SSD on my PC is making me spoiled. Other than that, it's what I expect from them. Light, easy to use, and of course aesthetically pleasing lol.

I had a friend who recorded with Garageband before so I'm at least sort of familiar with it. For right now it's pretty much what I can get by with and what I was using REAPER for, just putting together song sketches for the band to further develop. I'll get Logic Pro X for when I want to hop back into my indie album or my Toolesque metal album, for right now writing original tunes for Mike's band is taking up most of my time. I'm looking forward to using all my plugins from the PC on Logic Pro when I can afford it, in the meantime the simplicity to get a track started on Garageband isn't too bad. I do have Pod Farm 2 at my disposal though, so if I want better/more amp tones that I can do that with no issues.

I have none of the issues that the OP expressed.

I upgraded REAPER from 4 to 5 and didn't have any problems. I recently upgraded to a new PC and installed REAPER on the new one with no issues, including the license which I paid for in v4. I don't have a lot of 3rd party plugins, but all of them worked (VST's and VSTi's). If the any built-in plugins disappeared, the weren't ones I was using. The only annoying thing is that the plugins installed themselves all over the place and I had to add the new location to the path (in REAPER) each time, but I cannot blame REAPER for that. Copied the LAME files to the right folder (easy because REAPER popup told me the location) and mp3 is working fine.

I've always been fascinated with Garage Band, FWIW. Seems like a good interface for throwing together compositions. But no matter how I try to get myself excited, I can't get myself to pay Apple prices for hardware.

You obviously "read" the first 4 sentences and stopped...plus I was upset about there not being upgrade pricing available, not exactly that it wasn't free. "In depth" is a bit generous, though I do like the program. Either way, reading is fundamental LOL

You're mad that you have to upgrade the cheapest, deepest(look it up, this is the most customizable DAW on the market) DAW out there.

LOL

"Mad" is assuming a lot, but then again you didn't seem to read the original post with clear understanding anyways, so I can see how you came to your mistaken conclusion. Again, you apparently didn't read my post entirely because the bulk of it wasn't regarding pricing, but what was actually offered in the package, regarding plugins, as compared to other DAWs that are only slightly more expensive.

Learn to read or go troll somewhere else :smug:

Put reaper on the mini and see if your old projects work

Did this and it pulled up some of the Cockos plugins. Rifling through some demos on other DAWs though, their plugins are very VERY robust. I have a lot of 3rd party ones from my PC...Addictive Drums 2, Rapture Pro, Miroslav Philharmonik (haven't tried on Mac), and Antares Autotune. Some of the basic ones are ok on Reaper (EQ and compressor), but compressor algorithms and reverb options just aren't complex enough for my tastes. I have a lot of effects in Pod Farm 2.5 too, a lot of those are just gear towards instruments and don't translate well to other stuff.

I'm using it (REAPER) since I already own it, but I can see what everyone means by the workflow as well. I will add this tangent, Cakewalk's customer support is baller. Had some issues with my Rapture license and they got crap together lickity split for me. Rapture Pro is the only version compatible with Mac, but they did great by me giving me a generous discount on an upgrade. Love those guys!!

I am new to the DAW scene. I used to use Audacity years ago. Anyway, I am surprised that there is so much dislike for Reaper. I use Studio One and Reaper. Studio One for the killer Presence sound engine and Reaper for mixing down. I have the free version of Studio One so no MP3 rendering. Also, there are not many VSTs with the free version. I am not complaining, it is free right? As for feature count and confugurability, Reaper hands down has a lot and for $60. For $60 I can endure a workflow that is not top notch, whatever that is since it is relative. For $60 I can change how I do things. I am not producing a ton of things and I usually do not have more than 10 tracks at a time so workflow does not become an issue. I am not trying to sell anyone on Reaper, I just think it is not fair to grade any DAW on one thing. Also, to get anything as feature rich as Reaper, one would have to spend $400 plus.

Yeah the pricing was never something I complained about, $60 for a full license (for personal use) is super generous. Definitely one of the reasons I had no problem sticking with them for as long as I did.

64-bit both times, I am always mindful of which version I get. I'll have to check again and see, normally there was a built in script or something of that nature that told you how to get it integrated, didn't see anything this time around.

3rd party plugins (Rapture, A.D. 2, Pod Farm 2, etc) work fine, the number of Cockos plugins went from 30-40 down to about 5, and the 5 in the list wouldn't work, it stated incompatibility issues. Every time a new version (2.0 to 3.0) came out, I just ran the installer and everything worked fine, this time around all the Cockos plugins seemed to have issues and wouldn't run any of them. Made sure I checked to install plugins after reinstalling entirely, no avail.

I'd searched on there for a few of these issues, didn't see much of anything, but maybe I need to cool off some before posting LOL. I realize no DAW is going to be plug n play, it's just a complicated piece of software in terms of what people expect of it, so it won't be super simple. I'm fine with there being a learning curve for use, but it just seems like more and more installation issues occur as things go on. I am going to have to stick with it for a while, until I can do a Mac setup with Logic or until Michael Rowe finds us a studio that lets me sit in there and noodle on my own lol.

I'm glad you solved your problem, but it does help to leave the original question in your OP so that other people can search for your topic when they have similar issues.

Basically my argument is above. LAME wasn't being recognized on my PC though it was working before the upgrade, plugins disappeared, and I had some issues with pricing for people who already owned a license and were upgrading.

Most of what happened were people bringing up the same argument over and over again without reading the subsequent messages and I got tired of dealing with the replies which is why I changed it. There was no solution for the problem I was having on PC, I just put everything on my Mac and it all worked fine.
