Again, 'cutting through the mix' has lots of definitions. If cutting through the mix is the classic 'sitting above the bass drum and below the cymbals', that is a very different thing than 'putting a massive pillow of low end under the band, and then getting all your attack above 4K'.
Of course, cutting through the mix depends on the frequences covered by the other instruments. Sometimes you need to cut the bass tone and add more mids or highs.
