MTD Gas Pics

Mike,

I went to your website and I looked at the page with your bass on it. I noticed that it was delivered in 1996. I made an assumption that it was a newer built bass. Not that it makes any difference when it was made. I'm still very interested in how it sounds. I noticed that it doesn't have the BFTS on it. I guess Mike Tobias started using the BFTS on his basses later.

Mike,
That bass is soooo cool. Is Mike Tobias starting to change his design? I'm seeing different things coming from him. Some of them are posted in this thread. Do you know what's going on? There are single pup basses, and now there are neck-thru's coming out; and yours has the piezo bridge pup.

Congrats on this bass! It's so neat to look at. I noticed that even the back of the bass is great to look at. Sweet...

Please post a sound clip of this bass. :D

Joe

My bass was from '96. He still, at times makes one-off's. Some with neck through, chambered, piezo's etc. They are, as you might guess, few and far between (not to mention a bit $$$)

Mike

p.s. here is a clip of it in it's piezo - plucked mode this was when I first got it. It did not have "my" strings and had not been set up. I'll record some more clips and post them.

I don't know how to post pictures (I need to figure that out!), but for anyone interested, there is a picture of my wonderful MTD 535 (built for me in early 1998) on Jorg Schroeder's website.... I'm the last picture on the 'players page'. It's been a wonderful bass... I've keep buying and selling basses, but that one seems to stick around.

Here it is, and yes, it's a beauty...

Dan Lenard has my beautiful 535-24 Koa with ash neck MTD for sale on his website at Luthier's Access Group (under used gear). The ash neck wasn't my thing, but it's a beauty and is literally 'like new'!

That's a groovy little sound clip. I can see why you named it "upright". It sounds kind of like my upright when I was using a BP-100 Fishman pup on it. I think you're going to have lot of fun with that bass. I can't wait to hear how it will sound after you get it all setup to your specs. Thanks for sharing that one with us.

Thanks for sharing your MTD with us! Vics, thanks for posting the pic. *High-five*

KJung, what other basses do you have in your collection?

I'm so happy that you used sexy to describe Mike's work. I can't think of any other word that best describes his artistry. After looking at this thread and all of the pictures here, I've just stopped changing my pants. :D

Joe

After page 2 I had to strap on some depends in order to get through the rest of this thread. :D

My instructor has an ash/maple 435 with zero fret that is totally yumalicious! I've always enjoyed Mike Tobias' work and is a dream bass that I would love to own someday if I had the money to own one. I don't see this happening unless a Brad Johnson style deal fell into my lap or someone gave me a boatload of cash.

I'm happy that you're enjoying the pics. I am loving every minute of this thread. I've done searches for MTD pics here at TB, but they only come up here and there.

Dude; about your pants, maybe you should light a match or something... :D

I get weak in the knees whenever I see MTD basses. Every so often I see MTD pics on TB. I'd love to see what you consider to be the best MTD bass out there. They come in all flavors. What's your favorite? This thread has the potential to cause some serious GAS, so grab your Beano!

Here's one of my favorites:

My 5 is the sister to that bass:

I absolutely love this bass! I know that it may look a little Plain Jane, but I'm in love with it. It kind of reminds me of the Blond Warwick that came out not too long ago. This would be my number 2 choice. The bass I posted to open this thread would be my 1st choice.
