MTD mod'd with PEAVEY pickups??????

I don't see anything done here that's worse than what Jaco did to that pre CBS bass with his pliers and boat epoxy :D :hiding:
Totally apples and oranges. Bad analogy.

He started with an off-the-shelf production bass, he ADDED the "artistic value". He's the one that made it unique! A better comparison would be if someone actually managed to purchase the "bass of doom" and then start modifying it. I'm pretty sure most folks would think that was dumb.

I fall into the camp of you're allowed to do what you want with your property myself. And as long as no one tells him what to do with it being revolted by his choice is OK too :)
Don't misunderstand me... I also fall into this camp. I'm not saying I have any right to tell him what to do... I'm just being critical. I don't have any delusions at all of my opinion mattering to him, or really, anybody else. Believe that.

Like you said tho, I know I'm not alone in this, and it is a very polarizing thing when you get into someone permanently altering anything with artistic value.

That whole thing about not being able to compare apples to oranges is just silly, a slight amount of critical thinking should make it painfully obvious how easy it is to compare the two. It seems compare has come to mean claim to be similar. It's a pet peeve of mine comparable to using literally when one means figuratively. But I digress...

I bet more people are upset over what Jaco did to a bass that is many times more valuable than the MTD which is also a production bass. And somewhere someone is pissed off that a good Peavey was sacrificed to customize some unknown bass.

You're joking, right? When Jaco started working on that bass, I don't even think it was really vintage yet. Dude, we're talking the early 70's! At that time, it was just a used Fender J, and nothing more. I'd venture to say his ownership and also what he did to it added more to it's value than its being a vintage J! C'mon, I mean really... I think you're really stretching this one...

Also, your definition of a production bass is very different than mine, if you're going to equate an MTD to a Fender as that. Seems pretty crazy to me, but to each his own, I guess.

Ok, can we find some middle ground here? Vic, you are correct. Scaling prices, I would be much more ready to mod a 08 Fender Jazz than a brand new 08 MTD.

To Bob, the apples and oranges argument must be held, IMO, because then we would be comparing a flute to a timpani, which is nearly impossible to do.

I agree with Bob that it is just as sad that a Peavy had to be sacrificed. You can make a case for the "destruction" of an instrument.

The big argument here is whether or not it would be more innovative and cost effective to mod a "custom" MTD as opposed to a stock fender jazz. IMHO, modding a custom instrument defeats the purpose.

Trying to be a mediator here...:smug:

You're right, my opinion is wrong and yours is correct, I should have seen that earlier.

As much as I absolutely despise Bartolini electronics (I do not care what anyone says! Custom-wound/made Bartolini electronics still sound like Bartolini electronics!) I cannot see the purpose of buying a bass that was engineered to be a specific way only to swap out such a crucial component. Especially if you do not plan on keeping the thing.

Jaco didn't play an 08 :) he played a pre CBS

Compare is a completely different word than identical, you can compare differences as well as similarities. That's what I'm saying people don't seem to understand. If you can tell me the differences between a flute and a timpani you have just compared the 2.

Everything is precious to someone, some would argue that killing all those trees to make a consumer item is the real issue. If we accepted the more common version of what's precious building fancy guitars defaces the earth. If we accept other opinions as possibly valid that is. :)

I appreciate the attempts :)

To apply an example to your argument, routing out a 59 P Bass for Darkstars would make more sense than dropping new pickups into an MTD?

I think this would be less of an issue if people would just disagree with the guy and drop the hyperbole calling him stupid, blasphemous and stuff.

It's just a few screw holes, no one knows if any routing was even done and I doubt it was. Defiling, defacing? I'd argue that if this guy played one gig with this bass it has seen more respect than most boutique basses ever will. It's a 2 piece ash body with a one piece maple neck, not quite a golden calf in my eyes.

All basses with pickups would fall under that rule. Are you against all pickup swaps?

I am running low on time, but what I will say right now is you missed my point with the Fender jazz. The Pre-CBS Fenders were not as valuable then as they are now, so its *like* he modded an 08 Fender.

Lets not get into an argument here on words, I concede my *misuse* but see point above.

I'm sure people would scream if a guy routed a 59 P, just like the MTD

A few screw holes can ruin the worth of a bass *if* he wants to sell it, which he does, so it will not go for as much.

No one is calling him stupid. We are questioning his judgement, so it may come down to ignorance, not stupidity.

He's called stupid in the OP and others following. And many other names. no one even knows if he drilled tiny holes in the bass or not. A simple adapter plate could have been made and all this trauma may be unneeded.

So if an 08 is no problem to route but a 59 is bad what is the dividing year? How about a 79?

Everybody is allowed to have their opinion. Perhaps you should just get over that fact, if bothers you that much why keep coming back to this thread and posting? Or do you just like to argue your point?

Welcome to the internets... :atoz:

You got a problem with my opinion? Just enjoy irony? Somehow upset that I mentioned we don't even know if he drilled holes? What an odd response to the post you quoted.

I could have quoted any of your posts and said the same thing.. I was just addressing you. You are not so good at assuming things though...

Irony? Upset? Good jorb inspector gadget, good luck on your next case.. I could care less what he does to his bass, even though I think it's a shame it's still his bass.

...nice... ...not my direction at all... just trying to clarify what I was trying to say, 'cause it seemed you were missing my point, but if you really wanna' reduce things to this level, of course I can't stop you, but I'm also not going there with you. :rollno:
