MTD mod'd with PEAVEY pickups??????

Updates for anyone interested...

This was a complete cluster-xxxx.

First, the complaint was the pickups were "fading in and out", and he wanted to sell it because he wasn't using it much, so his "friend" told him he'd fix it. When he got it back, it had the Peaveys in it.

Turns out the guy did a lot more than that. He totally ripped out the preamp and threw it away. He changed it to a passive 4 pot plus pickup switch system (assume vol-vol-ton-ton), but instead of using all the existing pot holes (since the pickup selector switch is kinda' large), he took out the treble eq pot and filled the hole in with wood, then he drilled out the mid switch hole to put a pot in that location (why???).

The guy pulled the auction because he had no idea about any of this. All he knew is his "friend" swapped the pickups. He made it sound like he didn't even realize the bass had a preamp in it, which tells me he really doesn't know much about basses at all, let alone that bass, and it also makes me wonder if his "friend" took advantage of him to get a free preamp and pickup set.

At least the screws that hold the Peavey pickup bezels do go down into the corners of the bart routes, so at least there aren't any new holes in the top around the pickup routes.

VERY strange.

He recently emailed me to say he ended up selling the bass outside of ebay, but did tell the buyer about all the stuff.

I stand by my original critical opinion of this. :)

Why do people always have to take advantage of each other? The guy who did the pickup switch is a jerk, to put it PC. And what he did just for a set of pickups...

gee whiz, man...that's nuts...i was thinking about bidding on that bass, anyway, but decided against it

Nice investigation work, Vic. For what its worth, I have a feeling that we're going to see that bass pop up on sale a few more times. I do not really believe that the potential buyer(s) know what they're getting into.
Thanks.

And really, I'm pretty sure he was truthful with me because he was really good about communications and sent me a ton of pics of the bass, inside and out, and close up.

So I think it's safe to assume he did what he said and was up front about everything to the buyer. I also do believe he sold it because he originally told me after all that he'd just put the bass away and pick it up later if/when he wanted to resume playing it, because he did like it, at least. However, I did get a price for him from Mike on replacement guts, just in case, but he'd also have to add-on the cost of the tech to do the work (he wasn't qualified).

Thing is, it makes you wonder what he paid for this bass and how long ago. He clearly didn't know much about the bass. His other basses are P basses, so it also makes you wonder how or why he ended up getting it. I'm not going to bug him about this tho... he currently feels pretty taken-advantage-of, and I'm going to let him move on.

Anyway, the serial number on this bass is 594, finished on July 4th, 2000, according to the code in the cavity. Make a note to yourselves... just in case you see it pop up on ebay and not properly represented by the new owner.

This officially wraps up my PI work on this. :)

In a related note I'm selling a Celender with Squire Pick ups and the stock Marcus Miller 4 pre amp, Because that stock Greengrove pre and the Celender pickups couldn't give me the right blend of tinniness and hiss I was looking for.:D

Don't worry it was professionally installed by the famed Luthier Steve Wishnisky.:p:hiding:

Damn... that's harsh. Peavey Super Ferrites are some great-sounding pups. I agree with all of you that it wasn't a smart move, but that's not due to any lack of quality on the part of the SFs.
+1

Not to get off-topic on the Peavey stuff (please), but like a lot of the USA Peavey stuff, unduly underrated. Those are nice pickups.

Hey guys....................CALM DOWN.......... A TB MEMBER HAS THE BASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I purchased the bass from the guy because I love my 635 and wanted to try my hands at a 4er again. So I emailed Mike and purchased the original preamp and pups and am waiting for them to be installed. So......1. The Peavey pups are for sale :) 2. the bass may be as i'm gassing for another 6 string Ken Smith.... Dunno yet, just wanted to pass the info on to everyone especially everyone concerned with the assault of this bass. She is alright and still wife material. lol

Cool!

I had a feeling when he said he sold it... :)

Mainly I just feel bad for him 'cause he didn't know that much about the bass and trusted someone who essentially screwed him over. I'll never know if that was malicious or from ignorance, but the bottom line is, he's a good guy that trusted the wrong people. :(

Aside from looking very ugly I bet its still alright.

Id slap some Nordstrand pups in it if I were to come across it in that condition.
It'll be fine once that one hole gets drilled back out (since there's a wood dowel rod glued in there) with the single possible exception of the mid switch hole, which now might be too big, in which case he might have to get a little creative with washers, but yeah, other than that, it should be ok after putting all the guts back in.

Yeah, I wouldn't put Peavey pickups in there... But I don't think it sounds as bad as it looks at least.
Agreed.

As has been posted earlier in the thread, those are pretty nice pickups. No slam on those at all. The main issue I had is they should have just fixed the existing problem instead of gut it and totally redo it.

BTW, if you look carefully in a couple of the pics he emailed me, there's also dowel rods glued into the corners of the pickup cavities for the Peavey bezel screws to thread into, so those will also have to be removed before the replacement MTD barts can be installed. Whatever they have to do to make that happen will be fairly well hidden with the pickups in there, but unless someone uses a router to clean up the holes again, there will always be some sort of wood/glue residue in the corners (since those won't be covered up anymore.)

Anyway, all totally repairable, just regrettable it was done in the first place.
