MTD USAs

Well if I pick one up I'm gonna go visit Mike first for sure. My teacher actually used to work for Mike and is friends with him, but just wanted to go check out others opinions first. I was thinking something along the lines of semi vintage semi modern tone, was thinking either korina or tulipwood for body, and rosewood or wenge as fingerboard. One of the things that really attracted me to one was the looks, I've played a lot of beautiful ones with good tone, but I played on at Rudy's the tone threw me off a bit, probably just the wood combo. My teacher's MTD is made of korina body and wenge neck with maple fingerboard.

Mike T. often has used ones around the shop.

I just sold a 435 a couple of weeks ago, can't remember if it was on ebay or not. I only sold it so I could replace it with a 535 (I got the used one from Gard at BC, burl with amber finish).

There is a 435 on ebay right now, no bids at $1450.

This one is the third 535 that I've had (I sold the others), and I have an F-Bass BN5 on the way tomorrow.

I have not played anything else for the past year and a half. My 535's play, sound and look fantastic. By speaking with Mike T, I was able to get exactly the sound I was looking for. You owe it to yourself to try them out and inquire about wood combinations. Good Luck!

Ooooh...lemme in on this one. Here's my third MTD, a 535 with redwood top and avodire body and wenge neck.

I also tried *35's in different wood configurations--first one was ash/burl maple top with maple neck (I think Jerry J has it), the second one had a tulipwood body/wenge neck and went to BassNW as partial exchange for another bass. I've settled down with this redwood one; it is my favourite.

Wow....cool to see some "old friends" in this thread!

:D

Todd's Amber....grooveguru's korina....

...and funky...you lucky LUCKY bastid, that is my all-time favorite MTD, ever.

...sigh...if I hadn't been completely broke, that bass would be at my house, not yours! :spit:

I never even noticed that until you mentioned it. It looks like the 24 fret ones touch and the 21 fret ones don't.

That's probably because the cutaway on the 24 fret is deeper than it is on the 21, and to account for it, the battery cavity is moved back a bit.

Of course, I'm not Mike Tobias, so keep that in mind! ;)

Mine has had a bit of a hard life, but I still lover her. I noticed that I am not the only one that has the sucky looking metal knobs, I thought mine was alone.

I am even listed on MTD's user page, on their website. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I just pulled the trigger on this one...
#939, Mahogany body, wenge/wenge neck
That is beautiful...

The seller is only an hour from me, I'd be happy to go check it out for you :)

BTW, my favorite strings on my MTD are the Dean Markley SR2000 Will Lee. I've also tried the MTD Steel and DR Fat Beams.

Any one else have a favorite set of strings (for their 435/535/635)?

Gard, I have the MTD case working just fine now :D

Ok, I'll post a new pic of mine. It's #649, mahogany body, maple burl top, maple neck, ebony fingerboard w/ matching ebony truss rod cover and headstock. It's my second MTD. My first was bought through Bass Central, but I ended up sending it back to Mike Tobias because of what I preceived as "dead spots." Of course, Mike was quick to point out that I am unrealistically picky. He offered to build me pretty much anything I wanted, in trade for the one I sent him. I chose my current bass based on the sound of lenmoster's old MTD.
