MTD USAs

Ok, I'll post a new pic of mine. It's #649, mahogany body, maple burl top, maple neck, ebony fingerboard w/ matching ebony truss rod cover and headstock. It's my second MTD. My first was bought through Bass Central, but I ended up sending it back to Mike Tobias because of what I preceived as "dead spots." Of course, Mike was quick to point out that I am unrealistically picky. He offered to build me pretty much anything I wanted, in trade for the one I sent him. I chose my current bass based on the sound of lenmoster's old MTD.

Man thats quite a beauty. Mahogany and ebony fretboard is something else I would consider, how's the sound of that thing? I suppose it'd be kinda dark and warm?

Well, I'm terrible at describing sound. It's mellow, but yet has bite due to the ebony. Not super growly, very open sounding. It never gets too dark because I keep the strings quite fresh (MTD strings). I'll try and record a sound clip, although I haven't changed the strings for months since I'm no longer gigging. Oh, and I've been busy playing my new to me Q5.

The seller is only an hour from me, I'd be happy to go check it out for you :)

BTW, my favorite strings on my MTD are the Dean Markley SR2000 Will Lee. I've also tried the MTD Steel and DR Fat Beams.

Any one else have a favorite set of strings (for their 435/535/635)?

Gard, I have the MTD case working just fine now :D
Dean Markley Signatures.

OK, here is my new fretless:

My strings of choice are the TI Jazz Rounds (on all my basses). They have a small ball end which makes it a bit of a pain in the ass with the Hipshot bridge, but I love them

Mike

BTW, The bass is named "Kinda" as in "Kind Of Blue". It's pedigree name is:

"Kind Of, Well O.K. Really Really Blue"

Yeah, tell me what strings you all like. I want to know what "works" well with the bridge and scale length. I want to try something other than the MTD steels. The MTDs go "dead" (read lose their zing) quick for me (not quite as fast as sadowsky stings, which seem to go crazy dead for me).

I HATE YOU!!!

..not really, man, that shore is purdy! :D

What exactly does Mike T call that color???? I need to order one like that for the shop!

For the shop or do we have other things in mind ;)

Sean, ever find a clip of your bass? if not its okay :)

I am definitely happy about the way the bass turned out. Especially because it has no exotic top and I usually like just wood colored basses. It sounds incredible, mwah to die for.
The neck is Wenge/Wenge and the body ash. I am not sure what the color it called, I actually never asked. BTW here is my other USA MTD:

I like the knobs on this one better (anyone want to trade?)

Just think about the amount of work that goes into making them.

Brad,

I definitely agree. I am considering it because they are so wonderful. It's just there are many things to spend 100 on - including my family, food for the table, a snowblower, Christmas/Chanukah presents (for someone other than myself), and on and on. Please note that I am not trying to knock, on the other hand, I truly think they are wonderful. I was even asking Mike T. which ones he thought wouold look good on the fretted 435. I am just having trouble pulling the trigger.

Mike
