MTD Vs. KSD?

Also, we just re-carved a 5-string neck here in the shop and sent it back to Brooklyn Gear. They will see how close the factory can come to our design.
i own a MTD Kingston 5 since 2002 and a KSD ProtoJ 70, rosewood fretboard since mid 2004.
As much as i love the MTD and its playability, the sound is lacking immensely and at the moment its for sale (i have the passive one, i would love to check out the active ones though ... i was planning on slamming in an EMG 2band preamp in it but never did that. i am also very interested to have a J in the neck for it).
all i will say about the MTD that its a very very slick instrument. the neck is awesome and everything is amazing about it but the sound.
the KSD is one of the best basses i have owned (i had an American Ibanez custom made 5er before) and i like the KSD more. the neck is more full and difficult to play in the beginning but it is a lot more comfortable in my hands now after i stopped playing the MTD. the sound is killer! the passive circuit sounds great.
KSD = SOUND!!!!!!!! and very nice jazz look

THanx for the input. Looks like the KSD 60's has the warmer, fatter sound. That's what I'm looking for. But, I currently have a CIJ Fender Jazz Bass 62RI. I put EMG-J actives in it and a Bad Ass IIbridge. Now it sound amazing, but it's not fat! Would the KSD be a similar sound? I want something different!

Only Adam at Brooklyn Gear would know. I have nothing to do with the numbers. I think they are decalled on at the factory in Korea and BG does all the sales so if it was new when you bought it, it's at least that old..lol.. 4 years I think is the age of the project.

speaking of Adam and Brooklyn gear... I called them today to see if they had any KSDs, because i really like the tone on them and was in the mood for one and the phone is disconnected. Hope everything is ok over there. The neck is chunky and i may be totally ignorant here, but to me it seems there may be some correlation with a substantial neck and fat tone because the bass sounds great. One thing i have a hard time with, however, is that they are too long for most gig bags.
personally i love the neck on mine, the pre is good, was just too noisy for this weekend recording...and i totally agree about the too long for most gig bags, the one i was using got streched out and ive just started to keep it in the bag my blade came in, perfect fit
If weight is a issue, keep in mind that KSDs are at least 10 lbs or more. MTD Heirs can be lighter than 9 lbs.
Also, Michael Tobias stands behind his korean-made line and you can call him on the phone if you ever have a problem with your bass, whereas KSDs are handle by Brooklyn Gear (merely a distributor) and Ken Smith only gets involved with KSD whenever he feels like it.

If it serves your purpose, you will post here, talking about your positive involvement with KSD, but if it somebody's looking for customer support, then you tell them you have nothing to do with it.

I just think is not "cool" to try to score points by talking about your involvement in the "design" of KSDs, when is convenient, and then tell people you have nothing to do with KSD, when is convenient.
Just a friendly comment and a personal opinion.

But Ken did the deisgn, but doesn't do the sales/distribution/support. That part is all brooklyn gear. I haven't seen Ken change his stance on this at all.

I never changed my position. I just keep stating the same thing over and over again. I am involved to a degree because that is how it is set-up. It is a BG product and that says nothing to the quality or service delivered. It is just a different company than ours. What ever MTD does it their business, not mine. I recieved 4 emails today on the KSDs and replied to the customers and forwarded them to BG as well. BG replied to me to let me know how things were handled.
You seem to want to make business comparisons in a condesending manner. I assume then you know everything about KSD, BG, MTD, KSB and the Korean shop that I think supplies both BG and MTD as well. Unless they changed shops, I think we are all in the same boat.
So, if you want to make statements, go ahead. It's just more free advertising for all of us.

To be as authentic as possible, they are made with Single coil pickups. You get that same famous 60 cycle hum as you do on every Jazz Bass in the world with singles IF the pickups are not balanced evenly with the selector. When the balance is even, no noise at all.
