Multiples of the same bass

Now this is what I’m after. I’ve enjoyed every Japanese bass I’ve played so I figured this is my next step forward from my Stingrays. I had an American Fender before that I didn’t like as much as the MIJ stuff.

Yea, and you can't beat these large pole Fender hot rod pickups.

How do I reason

Reason? Let's just stop right there. Rational though says you need one bass. One. It is just bass. The audience doesn't care what it is. They can't tell the difference between a P or a J or a Stingray. Bass is bass if they can even hear it at all. One is all you need to get the job done. Unless you're a working pro who MUST have just the right tool for the gig, there is no compelling reason to have more than one.

The issue really boils down to two questions.
1. Do you want it?
2. Can you afford it ($$, space, S.O. relational impact)?

Well, in all fairness the second question really is one where reason and rational though needs to kick in.

well these days I have 2 4004 basses converted into 5 string basses and I have a nice 5 string rickenfaker ...

The Ric5 handle came from my propensity for liking 5 string Rickenbacker basses.

Why own multiples? Because I can! The fretless has the stock EB stainless flats, the Aqua has nickel Low Riders, the charcoal has Labella Low Tension Flats. I’m thinking about adding a 4 to get my slap on! Stingrays are an addiction that’s better than crack! Better for ya too!

I only have two basses I used for gigs pre covid, both are Lakland 55-94's from 2000. One is a lined fretless the other is fretted. They have different tunings one is GDAEB the other is CGDAE.

How do I reason with keeping multiples of the same bass? Especially when there are other basses I want but it would require me to sell.

I only own 2 basses, a Stingray and Stingray Special. I bought both of these for a great deal assuming I’d keep one and sell the other. Unfortunately I fell in love with both but have been wrestling with the idea of selling one and buying a MIJ Jazz or Jazz Bass Special.

I have other hobbies and activities that take priority in terms of funds and space so I’ve really been trying to keep my collection to a couple of amps and a couple of basses.

Thought this might be an interesting topic and help my decision making process.

I think a lot of pros have two of the same bass. One is a vintage or special edition that never leaves the house or only for very specials occasions and the other is the one they gig with.

...aaand there's your collection! Keeping it to 2 says it. Trying to give up what's been given the heart is tough...20 turntables later (in my case) says it for me...and the TBird, Fender-like P/J bass, 3 Firebirds, 3000 LPs, 2000 45s, shall I go on? I couldn't think of downsizing...

My most recent set of twins. Wasn't intending on 2, but heard a rumor this model might be reaching the end of its productivity. I love the tone of the EMG's, the Ebony board and Babicz bridge. So...after consideration, I decided to get while the gettin's good with this model.

I was hunting for a pre-‘88 Warwick Streamer this last spring, and right after I bought the 2012 limited re-issue, a real-deal ‘84 was offered to me (first year, <#100 serial), I couldn’t say no.

The 2012 is a much more refined bass, and plays better, but the ‘84 is a time capsule. I can’t image getting rid of either of them.
