If you had to chose 10 basses to keep for the rest of your life... none could be added or sold...

What would be on your list and why?

What I've got. Jazz bass special (fret and fretless), FEnder Jag Deluxe MIJ, FGN jazz bass, ibanez AFB200 hollow body jazz box bass, Drake 7 (fret and fretless) Martin ABG, Epiphone Rivoli (don't actually have it but do have 5120e) and my custom Drake "Nancy Lou"

If I had to choose only 10 basses I could have the rest of my life WITHOUT adding/selling anything else, they would all be various G&L L-2000s/L-2500s/ASATs with the same neck specs as my ASAT for the 4s and comparable for the 5s....as such isnt the case, variety is the spice of life

I don't know, mate. I've got a T-Bird and 2 parts build basses (Jazz and Jaguar) that I'll never give up. I'm in the process of building a fretless jazz and about the only other bass I think I would 'need' after that is maybe a P-bass with flats - which I would probably build as well. I think that would cover about every tone I could ever need.

Of course, as soon as I say that, I think: it would be 'nice' to have an EBMM Sterling... T-40... Hofner... PRS Kestrel.... etc. But my appetites are pretty boring. I don't care to play more than 4 strings and I have no desire for exotic/boutique basses. I tend toward classic designs and my favorite basses are the ones that I've built, so I guess my fantasy would be to have an ample supply of materials, parts and tools, rather than 10 basses.

What that's crazy talk I say! I'd have to sell ten. At least, though I think I'd be happy to keep several like the Elrick, J.Drozd, Tobias, vintage P, custom fretless Rummian, the 60's P (avatar) Minniweather 5, a P/J, a Jazz,.......ok now I see that can't happen cause I need a couple of other things ......oh.....never mind......mumble..mumble..harrumph

I picked these 6 because they cover a wide range of active & passive bass tones, they all play great, and I already own them.
I own others too, but these fill all my needs.

I have a Fender Steve Harris Precision arriving sometime next week, and hopefully it too will earn a spot on this list.

I'd have two of Duff McKagan's spec Jazz Bass specials that have better electronics and ash bodies.

2 MM Stingray 4 H, rosewood boards.

2 MM Bongo 5 HH

A modified Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass.

A Warwick Streamer LX.

Another modified Aerodyne, but modified a little different.

1. My 1975 Rickenbacker 4001 in custom blue finish, cause obviously. Tuned EADG
2. White 4003S tuned to BEAD
3. 4003S8, not sure what color. Tuned EADG.
4. Second 4003S8 in a different color, tuned BEAD.
5. My modded Peavey, which is currently tuned BEAD.
6. Second 4001 or 4003 tuned EADG.
7. 4003FL tuned EADG
8. 4003FL tuned BEAD.
9. Slab P-bass with an oversized single coil pickup slightly closer to the bridge than standard. Just because. White, of course.
10. My upright bass.

It looks like the original post was back in 2002? It would be cool for people who posted there to see if their choices have changed...
