Here's what I wrote in 2002:

Hmm. I'd never play more than a few.

1,2. My two Hanewinckels :)

3. Hanewinckel 6-string bolt-on with padauk/maple neck, ebony (maybe wenge?) fretboard, mahogany body, cocobolo top. Pickup locations like my fretless. Or, in a perfect world, Wal pickups and electronics.

3. Warr 8-string

Not basses, but: my Ovation Legend, and something like my PRS but with an oil-finished padauk/maple neck with V-contour to match the Ovation's. Hey, the tuning I use goes down into the baritone range at least! :D

There are lots I'd like to have available (Ric, MM5, etc), and/or check out (F BN-6, Basslab STD or L-Bow, etc). But I feel bad enough that I don't play my Stick much anymore.

After LOL'ing about having two #3s there, regarding the 1st one, in 2005 I did get a 6-string fretted Hanewinckel that was similar to that spec, though with a padauk top. The pickups are Bartolini quad-coils in MM5 shells, and I added an ACG filter preamp a bit later. It still doesn't sound like a Wal exactly, but it is super versatile and sounds quite good.

Anyway, the new list would maybe be like this

1,2,3 - my existing Hanewinckels
4. Wal mk1 fretless
5. classic Stingray
6. great P bass (Lakland perhaps)
7. Sadowsky vintage J
8. Ken Smith BSR4
9. I'd say a Shergold Marathon 30" 6-string, but perhaps the Kiesel Vader I have on order will do that job well enough
10. Lakland Hollowbody

I've got a US Plus IV and two US highway one J's. Except for strings, set up and a brass nut on the Plus, they are as the lord made them. There is also a couple of MIM J's floating around, one Deluxe with a brass nut and the red bass of death. The red MIM is modded all to heck and my most played. I've also got an MIM Deluxe J body and an aftermarket standard J body in Florida Cypress. Only one good neck though so I'm letting that rest for a minute. If I had to cut down, I'd go for the RBD, the US Plus, and the parts, so call that three basses. I'm about to need some hollow bodied stuff though, and I think three will cover it, so that's 5. If I'm ever gonna learn upright I'll have to get one. Makes it 6. Next would be a US Peavey five string dynabass and a T40, so that's 7. Never had more than two pickups so eight would be something with at least three (or more) pickups and a ton of knobs and switches.

Since I only want eight basses, I'll be happy to sell my other two once in a lifetime picks. Please contact me with offers.

They are so far above my pay grade they are not even on the radar. It's the difference between Craftsman and SnapOn, and I'm a Craftsman kinda player. What can I say? I was raised on Peavey and weaned over to Fender.

Well, if the question was something about "what bass would you love to own for free for a year?", you might see those pop up more. But, I haven't spent enough time with most of those to say I'd pick one to be on my "only basses allowed" list.

That's pretty much me with most production basses. I'm currently having a T-bird modified because I want a pickup selector switch and I don't need a tone knob.
