it's usually not recommended to line the inside of a pickup cover with grounding foil, because it can cause eddy currents that dull the tone. (there are specific tricks to interrupt that kind of lining so it doesn't form eddy current loops though)

#4 is plain incorrect; always ground any and all shielding, otherwise it becomes an antenna and adds noise!

i'd advise #1, maybe #2 and grounding the poles from the bottom with foil, that should do the trick

I just went through this on my '95. I did steps #1, #2, and #3. For the pickup shielding, I lined the tops and the outside walls, connecting the two cavities on one side of the PU cover only. After reading about tone loss, eddy currents and Strat/Tele pickup shielding, I decided to play it safe in this regard. My bass is now absolutely dead silent with no signal degradation whatsoever.

Just completed, successfully, steps #1, #2 as well as walterw's pronouncement to only ground the pole pieces together, which then ground themselves to the cavity foil via the four springs. I did not shield the pickup case. Complete and total joy. It's not the prettiest job, but it works a treat.
