Music Man Stingray Classic - grounding issue?

i would like to add something to this thread.
i just bought a stingray 4, active 3 band eq. Dob: 16-5-2000.
it has the exact same problem as the first post here. When i realese the strings, bridge, tuners or control plate it starts buzzing. but when i touch the pups it starts buzzing more than usual. Is this normal on an active bass?

i delivered it to my local luthier who is going to check the grounding on it. (btw; i exited the guitar shop with a new warwick rockbass corvette ss that cost me 5200 NOK :bassist:

So! the problem can be fixed by shielding the bass with copper foil or fix a poor connection(if there is one)?
ps: the problem is not in the instrument cable, amp or audio interface.

I pickuped a used EBMM classic SR5. I called EB and was told the bass mfg date is 4-23-3010. Not a scratch on it mint. It has the same buzz issue described by the OP. Take my hand off the strings buzz, touch strings, buzz stops?
 
I've got this same issue with mine, 2007 Classic 2 band. I also find that mine makes a pop of static electricity when you first touch the strings. I find it hard to believe a bass of this quality could be expected to pick up the amount of noise that this thing does. I refuse to plug this bass into anything other than my small roland cube. Of course my local techs also think you can't remove the hum from a Fender....

I have shielded the control cavity, I do intend to add copper tape around the magnets and shield them to the cavity but I won't have time for at least a week, back working on my fretless epoxy right now. I was hopeful this would fix it until I saw post 39, I'll follow up with updates for anybody else curious, this seems like a common issue.
 
So I got antsy and I started on the stingray today while my epoxy cured. I shielded the inside of the pickup covers with copper foil as well as the pickup cavity, but not the inside of the wire hole between the two cavities, I don't know if that's even possible?

This did not remove the noise. Although this did seem to reduce the volume of the static electricity pop when the strings are touched so I think I am making progress.

I did not run a strip of copper wire along the pole pieces of each pickup. I was a little unsure on this step, I am concerned that if I connect all the magnets it will adversely affect the tone, anyone? Right now the springs are on the outer pole pieces and touching the copper foil inside the cavity. I was hoping to get a little more advice before I make my next step.
 
I've done it!!!! I've silenced my music man!! I now have an electric bass that I can play unplugged and plugged in!!!

So for the record, there IS something wrong with the bass and there IS something you can do about it!!!

I will post details tomorrow.... after the hang over probably, it's st.patty's and saturday night, I do have some life outside of talkbass.

There is hope people!! It is my personal mission to destroy hum, ever since I found out I could remove it from my Fender P. Why is it Leo makes basses that hum and just calls it ok, do G&L's hum or how did George feel about it?
 
Ok, so first and foremost to clarify a couple of things. As Walterw and SGD said, if you touch the strings and the noise stops you have a shielding issue, if you touch them and the noise gets louder you have a grounding issue. I've known this for years but never knew why until it was explained earlier in the thread. Excessive noise is a serious issue and should be treated as such, a hum is an issue, I like many, am sick of being told nothing is wrong with an instrument. It's an electric instrument not an acoustic one. Lastly, apparently 99% of guitar techs tell you this cannot be helped (it is not just Nashville, Guy n. cognito)

I had never spent a lot of time on another stingray outside of mine, I had played quiet knock-off's so I didn't know if the hum was common.(:rollno:) My Stingray also would pop on initial string contact apparently due to static electricity build up. I was told this by a local guitar repair man, he also said it was a common un-fixable issue with Les Paul's. My hum was so bad I would describe it as offensive, a new bass player at my jam space had a 2-band, it was silent. I knew mine was fudged. Keep in mind when I say silent, it's not dead silent, the pickups are inherently quite noisy and do pick up a lot of unwanted noise. In fact even now with the treble boost at max you can actually hear my fingers going over the pickups, but as earlier stated these basses do not sound good with that knob cranked.

I initially shielded the control cavity when I first got the bass, I had used tin foil tape like they use for ductwork. I re-set the ground wire under the bridge, I also added a ground wire to the pickup jack, it is grounded through the metal plate, but why not start easy. This really didn't do much if anything for the noise.

Next attempt, was a couple days ago, where I added the copper foil lining to the pickup cover as well as in the pickup cavity on the body. I made sure to clear out the copper tape from the leads on the pickup covers. You don't want the leads touching the copper. This did help a little but not at all to my level of satisfaction.

Nobody responded in regards to running foil under all the pole pieces so I was still very unsure of this step. It did not seem to work for post #39. I am not qualified to do any of this so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Instead all I did was run a wire between the pickup cavity and the control cavity and soldered it from the copper pickup cavity foil to the ground on the control board. I didn't make pictures because there are plenty on the subject already.

This also stopped the buzz you got when you actually touch the pole pieces. I'm sure you all found that made the issue worse as I did.

I think that about covers my long, over posted, pretentious, advice. I just hope that everybody else can now go out and remove the hum from their own musicman.

Hello everyone. I hope this thread isn't too old to revive! :hiding:

Just for a very brief background I'm a first time DIY'er. My '97 SR5 has not been getting much play time lately, and I figured I'd make a change to try to revive my love for the bass. I ordered and installed a Nordstrand MM5.2, as well as the John East 3 band, 4 knob preamp.

First off, this pickup / preamp combination sounds KILLER! I have a friend who owns a pre EB stringray, and my SR5 sounds near identical to that now. I had always felt that my SR5 sounded "close but no cigar" compared to the SR4's that I had heard and loved. I don't have to worry about that now! The only issue I'm dealing with is a similar one to what was originally posted in this thread. I hear buzz / hum when I'm not touching the strings, and if I touch the poles of the pickups by themselves the noise gets very loud.

Based off of the info I have read in this thread, it sounds to me like I should put copper tape on the bottoms of the poles, and run that to ground. I've attached links to two pictures, one of the pickup and one of the cavity. I've soldered the jack ground to the bridge wire, as well as an additional cable from the bass pot to the bridge wire as well. I reconnected the wire coming off of grounding plate (screwed in to the body inside the cavity) to the volume pot. Although the pickup has a bare wire that I have run into the cold terminal of the preamp, I don't see that bare ware landed to anything on the pickup. Picture links are below:

Any insight on how I can get rid of the noise? My guess is that shielding tape on the poles will fix my issue, but I'm wondering if someone who has more experience might be able to confirm that I haven't done anything boneheaded first :) Thanks in advance!
 
Bump! Does anyone have an opinion on the post above? I ordered some copper shielding tape, but it hasn't arrived at the house yet. Does anyone know of any brick and mortar retailers that sell copper tape with the proper conductive adhesive? Thanks :)
 
Go to a stained glass supply store and you can find copper foil tape. If you read my posts clearly (as I am the only one who fixed the issue on the thread) I did not run copper tape under the pole pieces, I don't see that as being correct.

My issue was resolved, I am not saying that method won't work, but I didn't trust it.

If you're getting a hum when not touching the strings, then the strings aren't grounded on the bass.

Check the bridge ground wire. Using an ohmmeter, you should have continuity from the bridge to the back of each pot and the control plate. If the resistance is high, infinite or intermittent, then replace or install the wire or otherwise adjust it accordingly. Or take it to somebody that can do the work for you.

The noise when touching pole pieces can be resolved by grounding them as others have already mentioned.

Sorry if my advice seems too obvious, but I'm appalled by what others have suggested in this thread. (ie: nothing wrong with the bass) Just because most SR4 classics exhibit this behavior doesn't make it right.

+1 to folks pointing out it's likely just a shielding issue. Also, it could be a grounding issue at the venue (the pronounced highs of the MM could be making the buzz more obvious).

Also, I was under the impression that it was boost/cut, but the flat point is round about 2/10 (hence why no center detent, sticking to the original design).

That's correct. If the buzz goes away when you touch the strings, it means the strings are grounded, and they are grounding your body, which is why the noise goes away.

If the strings were not grounded then touching them would make no difference.

Shielding makes string grounding less important. This is partly why you don't need to ground the strings with EMGs.

Thanks to all for keeping this thread alive. I got my foil tape in the mail and started going hog wild! Although I haven't done a thorough job yet, I did shield the pickup cavity (and ran a wire to ground). That has already helped noticeably, to where I don't hear any difference in low cycle hum when I touch the knobs on the bass. I don't hear a pronounced difference when I take my hands on or off the strings either. I'll most likely go back in over the weekend and finish the whole back of the pickguard, etc, since I still have tape left. Overall, I've compared it to my other instruments, and it's pretty much right on par with them as far as electrical noise in my practice room.

In regards to the scratch plate, you don't have to do the whole plate, just where it actually goes over the pickup cavity, I find the best step is actually doing the inside of the pickup covers, again being sure to keep the magnets clear of the foil tape.

4. Don't connect the copper shielding between the pickup cover and the pickup cavity. Just let it float. Don't connect anything to the pole pieces at all, top or bottom.

Does that sound right?

That is all correct except #4. You want all the shielding connected to ground, including the pickup cover. You don't want the leads of the pickup to touch the copper. Do not ground the pole pieces for RF interference (buzz that stops when you touch metal/strings/bridge). If you get noise when you touch your pole pieces, then you may want to ground them. I will read it. If your pickup connects pole pieces to the cavity foil, like the springs in a Stingray, you’d isolate them with electrical tape, say?

It shouldn't matter either way, the poles should already be grounded. I wouldn't go out of my way to add tape.

On the note of grounding the pickup cover, I like to bring copper over the screw holes and use the screw to connect the shielding all together.

it's usually not recommended to line the inside of a pickup cover with grounding foil, because it can cause eddy currents that dull the tone. (there are specific tricks to interrupt that kind of lining so it doesn't form eddy current loops though)

#4 is plain incorrect; always ground any and all shielding, otherwise it becomes an antenna and adds noise!

i'd advise #1, maybe #2 and grounding the poles from the bottom with foil, that should do the trick

Thanks to you and OP for confirming. This thread needed a bullet point list of the correct information (lots of tl;dr) and it went off the rails on page one for a bit, so you’ve helped to distill the info to a succinct, consumable morsel.
