I think feel is the first test to tell the difference. Tru oil should be smoother and grab the thumb less. And, tru oil may come off with mineral spirits, but I’m not sure.

I’ll give the mineral spirits test a try.
I looked closer today in some decent light and I can see some drip lines in whatever finish was applied, also there’s a pronounced edge where the rosewood starts too. Well, pronounced is probably too strong of a word, but I now that I’m laying closer attention it doesn’t feel like Amy other Stingray I’ve played. I’m nearly positive some sort of finish was applied. I’ve got the neck taped up and will be working to remove whatever gunk was put on previously with careful sanding. Hopefully I can have closer to OEM spec shortly
Having done tung oil and Tru Oil plus wax recently to some old basses (‘79 - ‘85 Ibanez and Peavey), I can tell you that tung oil feels more satiny and will be my preferred finish. Tru Oil will shine up and feel more tacky on the thumb, and it resists discoloration. This all makes sense when you think of old shotguns and rifles w/ tru oil finishes. I’ve never had one that felt satiny. But, I wonder if some steel wool would make the tru oil feel like tung?

I recently bought a Cutlass (Musicman-P) and it gets more playing time than my Ray.
Maybe because it is still honeymoon-time with the Cutlass
The Bongo for sure. The Caprice is definitely a modern approach to the same ol bass everyone has imo, but the Bongo is special. The Stingrays definitely have a distinct tone that I really dig, but the Bongo gets the majority of the play.
FYI whatever was on my Stingray neck was certainly not poly. I was able to remove all of the finish down to bare wood with 220 grit in about 15 minutes. From there it was relatively easy to follow the standard EB neck care protocol and now she’s oiled up and smooth as silk!
Having so much fun with my SR5. Just wanted to share a pic of it with Ya'll. I bought it off of a guy here on TB a couple of years ago. Just put some TI's on it and I'm loving it again (although this pic was taken a while ago when it was still wearing rounds)

It's pretty finishes like that one (and especially my honeyburst! 
) that make me wonder what Musicman was thinking when they decided to cover up half of the SR5 with that pickguard. Don't get me wrong, my SR5 is without question my #1 and is the last piece of bass gear I'd sell if I needed to liquidate. But with such beautiful clear finishes and bursts, why cover up so much of them with such a massive pickguard?
But, that's nitpicking. I love Stingrays and that one is a fantastic example of why! drool

Fortunately my SR5 HP is black on black for the moment so I'm not cryin'
but I did get a black Pearloid from EB and will get a Tortoise guard when
I get ready to play Barbie dress- up in the future.
Well, it's Saturday night, and I'm gigless this weekend, so what's a guy to do but try and get ahead with a little bit of pre-production tone-work for the next single that's up for recording.
I'm trying to nail down the tone I want to use as a starting point for bass tracking. Given that my StingRay 5 is my primary bass, that will be used without-a-doubt, with the primary variable being my post-bass preamp settings.
Obviously things will be adjusted in post during mixing, but I'm currently debating between these two relatively similar options that I quickly (and roughly) recorded this morning just to see how the tone for each translates when played back.
Decisions decisions... any thoughts on either from the TB StingRay collective while I wait for rough drum tracks to lay this over for a better idea?

Anyways, my drummer came through with his "rough" track late last night. I made up my mind on the tone style I wanted to use, and put down bass on top of it this afternoon.
This is just my '06 StingRay 5 (ceramic) strung with Chromes, and going through my VTDI to my DAW. No other adjustments (yet). Bass comes in around 0:18 (guitar/drum intro on this one).

I didn’t even know these existed. An SR5 without a pickguard...Walked into local GC during lunch. This beauty was hanging up in the used section. Always wanted a 20th Single H, so I walked out with it. This is my fourth SR5 and it will be buried with me. Can't wait to get it home, clean it up/set it up and start gigging with it.
EDIT: Updated with a better pic.
Yeah, the anniversary models didn't have them. It would be a shame to cover up that nice top with such a huge pickguard and I think EBMM made a great decision on those.

Not sure what is under the pickguard but you can always take it off and see. If you like the look, and still want a pickguard, they do sell clear pickguards.
Here’s what’s under the pick guard on an SR5. I’ve seen some custom guards that just cover the electronics cavity.
