Music Stands on Stage??

Alright I just got to mention, this same Egotistical Mother Trucker I wrote a song about use to complain and complain about people who used music stands on stage. As if they weren't real musicians and they weren't worthy of playing with him. You should have seen the pictures we got back with his set list taped to his mike stand. Oh yeah he realized it didn't look good but it was still obvious on the floor at his feet. Never clicked in his mind what an A$$ he was because of his bigoted and biased opinion. A simple nice professional music stand would have solved the whole problem.

It does sound like this is a pretty widely held opinion amongst some folks, even though it doesn't make a lot of sense to me at all. Weird. I never even knew anybody thought this was some sort of issue before I saw this thread.

We recently got a guy to sing with us. He is a very good frontman (and a better bassist than me.) The only thing is...he has a music stand complete with a lamp. I remember when he sang with a friend's band and I commented to him on a break "I see he has a music stand.." My friend replied "yeah, his pu**y hurts if he can't use it!"

Haha… my buddy sang thousands of shows through the 80s/90s, and never used one.

We recently put this little project together with a couple of old buddies he used to play with, originally for jamming and writing/recording, but nobody here’s been on stage for many years

We did this bar gig last night (drummer’s brother’s bar) sorta as a low-key warm up to a larger show coming up, and singer felt he wasn’t ready and suggesting bringing the music stand.

He even taped a night light to it, but didn’t need it cause the overheads were good enough, but that does look pretty sloppy.

I’m sure it’ll never happen again, though. Hell, we’ve only got two sets of material.

Now, now, now...

Honestly, the group in that pic looks just fine. Sure, doesn't look like they're trying to set any fashion trends, but they do look like a band that would probably provide a good time for a room full of folks at a bar. What more could do you need?

The stand in the pic is low and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb and the singer looks like he's got his face up and is not burying his nose in his notes - so heck - I don't think anyone would think twice about it - unless they'd visited this thread, that is.

To me, looking up and looking like you're into what you're doing is so much more important than whether or not there's a stand on the stage. You could have the most stand-free stage - but stand there and stare at the ground with a grimace on your face and you'd suck just as bad as if everyone had stands pulled to face height.

As a matter of fact - next gig I think I am going to go out and buy about 20 stands and put them up all over the stage, hang some from the ceiling and even put some out in the crowd! We'll call the show "We can't stand it anymore!" - or "Stand and Deliver!" - or "Stand and be Counted!"

Cool - something useful came from this thread after all!

^^^^ Please post pics. I'd be interested in the reactions from the audience. I'm a bedroom player and no shame about it, if I ever play for an audience it will be an act of God. I do this for fun. That being said, from the audience point of view, (which I am slighltly more familiar with) I only notice music stands if they are thirty feet tall and cover the persons face. Or perhaps if it obstructs the view of whatever gear I'm trying to examine from a distance. Always interesting to see what other people use. Like a box of chocolates!

Thanks for being reasonable. I only read the first couple pages, but maybe there’s more of a feud going on than I imagined.

We were very entertaining, and the show fit the context of the venue.

And I don’t stare at my neck, it was just an unfortunate pic my neighbor took. He plays a bit of guitar and comes over to jam occasionally, so he wanted to come and see us.

Considering I’m not the showman (old sound guy), I’m sure it could have been MUCH worse, though, so I’ll settle for this pic with no problem.

Maybe I should have instructed him to take a pic while I was on the mic so I’ look cool.

If it was a church gig you could call the show "Stand up, stand up for Jesus..." :D

And, of course, R.E.M.'s song "Stand!"

And speaking of R.E.M. - I caught them at Riverport (an outdoor amphitheater here in St. Louis) about 15 years ago and guess what Michael Stipe had right there in front of him... Go on... Guess!
