Honestly, the group in that pic looks just fine. Sure, doesn't look like they're trying to set any fashion trends, but they do look like a band that would probably provide a good time for a room full of folks at a bar. What more could do you need?
The stand in the pic is low and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb and the singer looks like he's got his face up and is not burying his nose in his notes - so heck - I don't think anyone would think twice about it - unless they'd visited this thread, that is.
To me, looking up and looking like you're into what you're doing is so much more important than whether or not there's a stand on the stage. You could have the most stand-free stage - but stand there and stare at the ground with a grimace on your face and you'd suck just as bad as if everyone had stands pulled to face height.
As a matter of fact - next gig I think I am going to go out and buy about 20 stands and put them up all over the stage, hang some from the ceiling and even put some out in the crowd! We'll call the show "We can't stand it anymore!" - or "Stand and Deliver!" - or "Stand and be Counted!"
