Musical Immaturity - Is it that common?

My grandmother always used to say: “With morning comes a reckoning.” I think the lesson we’re collectively and inevitably heading towards is going to be a fairly harsh one.

There’s a video about a certain aspect of game design that I think has a lot of bearing on the point you’ve made. Worth a watch when there’s 18 minutes to spare. And who doesn’t have at least some time to spend these days?

Oh I dunno…

I’m more often surprised at the fundamental decency of people when you give them the chance. At least around where I live.

The big problem is we’re social creatures and the lowest common denominator in a room full of people tends to set the tone. I’m not very patient with that sort of person and tend to call them out on their behavior when I’m in a social situation and I encounter one of them. Once they realize they don’t have the tacit support of the crowd they’re in they tend to do a quick fade out. After which the atmosphere in the room tends to improve dramatically. Bad habit of mine doing that. But life is short - and so am I.

Seems to happen a lot online, 'they suck' is a common response from 14-yo boys, but from 40-yo men?

Some of my 'friends', who also play Music, have the same limited maturity:
mention Janet Jackson - Ah, she's a no-talent hack
posting memes about how Smash Mouth concert-goers should die

It's just sad!

Is it really that common, even among Musicians?

I'll admit, I'm not the most Musically mature, but I don't go around putting others down because of their choice in Music, and especially not posting memes about Artist X sucks so badly.

In a lot my travels, depending on who I’m playing music with, I get the patient, nod of the head and the little smile when I expand the conversation beyond the comfort zone. Except for a trio of band situations, this is the norm. I’m speaking as it pertains to genre and not so much an artist.

People like different things. Saying "artist x sucks" is a way of saying "I don't like artist x". Taste is subjective. Just because you are "mature" doesn't mean you have to like everything. In fact, I personally think people who like most everything to basically have no real standards.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot - Motorhead suck.

No. Having lived through the era, I can honestly tell you that only Disco sucked. And then I got older and it wasn't as bad as I thought.

The majority of YouTube Comment Sections and Facebook replies seem to be the cesspool of humanity. The topic does not matter.

I am a metal head. I used to hide the fact from my metal head friends, that I liked all kinds of other music.

I remember when Pearl Jam released their first album. I hated them so much. To me, they were clearly the epitome of "corporate rock" and had nothing worthwhile to say. The problem is, I thought the song "Alive" was really catchy and sometimes I wouldn't get around to changing the station when it came on when I was driving. I *might* even have turned it up slightly by mistake.

I no longer believe in the idea of musical "guilty pleasures" and don't really care what people think of my taste in music. Hell, I don't even care how "corporate" a band or artist is - or if he/she/they "sold out".

That said, I was listening to music on shuffle on the bus a few months ago and the Boney M Megamix started playing and I'm pretty sure the guy stood next to me could tell what I was listening to. It really tested my theory of there being no such things as "guilty pleasures".
