Musical Immaturity - Is it that common?

Seriously though, I'm at a point where I can not like a certain song, artist or genre, but still acknowledge that they are good musicians.

I have respect for anyone who takes the time to create and/or perform music of any type. That being said, musical taste is VERY subjective and people tend to have strong opinions. Getting upset or offended when people (even musicians) say an artist, song, or even an entire genre sucks isn't a reasonable response in my view because that viewpoint is so common. Ironically, genres that are similar in many ways like bluegrass and oldtime, often save the most vitriol for each other.

I was a terrible music snob when I was younger, but since learning the bass (as an adult) and playing music in a band, I've come to appreciate it how hard it is to make and record any type of music that attracts fan attention, gets radio play, streams, etc. I'm still a snob, but appreciate what goes into all types of music. About the worst thing I say these days is that music I don't enjoy is simply not to my taste. My "that sucks" days are over.

It's not just music, it's how people are. One of the easiest ways to get money is to establish a thing around which people can derive an identity, from there you just let in-group preference manage everything and pump out merchandise. You'll find it everywhere and it's not new - remember the disco backlash? How about the sorts of trash-talking that occur between people who drive fords and chevys? How about people that think that how a person dresses and cuts their hair makes a difference? Heck, just wait until you meet the people that get uppity about other people's preferences in beer and coffee of all things. The act of making simple, jingoistic or tribalistic distinctions like this is something that I imagine served us well way back in the proverbial day, and as such has been possibly hard-wired into our brains and socially amplified to this day.

Our culture is negative. Remarks are negative. Humor is negative. All of the late night show's humor is based on the negative.

Even when we say something positive, we say it in a negative way.

For, "you are welcome", we say........"no problem".

If something is good, we say.........."that's not bad".

If something is good looking, we say........."I've seen better."

"What do you think of my dog?"..........."Does he bite?"

"Do you like pizza?"............"Depends."

"How did you sleep last night?"............"Ehmm."

"Haven't see ya in a while, you are looking good!"..........."I need to loose 10 lbs."

And so it goes for music too. Genres like Hip-Hop, Techno, Country, Blue Grass, Death Metal, Teeny Bopper Pop and etc generate negative remarks.

It's the way that we are!

I learned at an early age that musical enjoyment depends on the ear of the beholder. One day many moons ago, I was listening at a high volume to "Into the Void" by Black Sabbath. I thought to myself, how could anybody write and perform such a masterful piece of music. My Dad burst into the room and said, "How can you listen to this cr*p? Turn that lousy music off." I came out of the room and he was listening to Frank Sinatra or Perry Como, and I said, "Well, it's 100 times better than the junk you listen to."

I learned a lesson that day. Music is a real personal thing. You can't fool yourself with music. You love what you love. Who am I to say what should float your boat? And why should I care unless I'm some kind of control freak. I never say the best guitarist is this person or the best singer is that person. I will say, IMHO, my favorite singer is this person.

Gotta keep in mind that hate toward certain acts like Nickleback and Justin Bieber are sometimes just running gags.
I guess memes is the word the cool kids use now. They are the "tort" of the 2000s.

I can't tell which hate is real at this point. It's a very strange world now. There's immaturity and ignorance at all levels.

Some of my 'friends', who also play Music, have the same limited maturity:

I'll admit, I'm not the most Musically mature, but I don't go around putting others down because of their choice in Music, and especially not posting memes about Artist X sucks so badly.

I have been in enough bands and to enough auditions to say YES, YES YES. For whatever reason when most folks strap on a guitar they lose their minds.

I've seen it all after being in 20 bands.
People who refuse to learn the songs, adjust their volume, compromise on anything, book free gigs 2 hours away without asking a single person in the band if it's ok.
Changing the setlist you practiced for a month, 5 minutes before the show starts.
Showing up late for the show.
Not fixing their busted gear before the gig.
Not picking up the bands pay after the gig, not paying the band members after the gig. Expecting you to show up to an audition nailing 10 songs, only to find out the band doesn't even know 5 of them!
Tuning your over loud guitar without muting between every song, and the singer not talking to the audience between songs while the guitarist tunes his guitar or switches guitars. Not listening to any other band member for queues...
The list is so long... this is only a handful.
Most guitarist, singers and drummers i have played with NEVER got past middle school level maturity even at 40 or 50 years old. So it really doesn't surprise me that this immaturity pours over into their opinions on "good" vs "bad" music...

To categorize and dismiss an artist or musical movement etc., without understanding the Virtue that supported it while it was here. People who grew up in ROCK and dismiss SWING simply don't know how powerful exciting and dangerous swing was. Maturity may include not jumping to the most obvious and socially approved conclusions, looking into a subject with some open mindedness. A hallmark of immaturity is the need to Self Define via identification of preferences. As maturity approaches that function should fall away...it should no longer be needed.

I'm recalling when I first got home from abroad & was catching up with family.
A couple of us were close about Music, because we were in the same school, we went to all the same concerts back then.

Well, there I am mentioning that Skinny Puppy opened for the Ramones at the Hollywood Palladium, "They suck!", was the 14-yo response for this adult who is only a couple of years younger than myself.

Later-on I found out this person is now a fan of Steve Miller & Willie Nelson, & is the same person who told me that Steven (Tyler) Tallarico is The Talent in Aerosmith!
I guess my point about Steve Miller & Willie Nelson is that this person expected me to welcome this change in them, but Skinny Puppy was out of bounds.
I never did tell them I danced in Goth clubs almost every weekend in Los Angeles. Our mutual friend went to L.A. as a teenger & came back hating that town, LOL!




I use that line now, I'm into both genres of Music:

I don't think a simple response of, "they suck" is immaturity as i do a culture thing.
Simply put, a short way of saying you don't like something without explaining it here in So Cal is just saying it, they or wtv sucks.

Yeah, I think a lot of people who are used to being jerks behind an anonymous keyboard are forgetting that you can't/shouldn't do that in person. I have a feeling there's gonna be some wake up calls coming.

My grandmother always used to say: “With morning comes a reckoning.” I think the lesson we’re collectively and inevitably heading towards is going to be a fairly harsh one.

There’s a video about a certain aspect of game design that I think has a lot of bearing on the point you’ve made. Worth a watch when there’s 18 minutes to spare. And who doesn’t have at least some time to spend these days?

Sometimes I see it as musical insecurity that leads to the negative comments of other artists.

I’ve been around a few vocalists like this who would comment on how bad someone was any time someone else singing. It really came down to the fact that these vocalists were just insecure in their abilities.

As a metal head, I was as guilty as anyone of this....when I was a teenager. Heck I even thought Prince sucked because he wasn't "heavy." Luckily I've matured and now Prince is among my all time faves. Nowadays, if I don't like something, I can appreciate it for what it is, and that not everything is for everyone. I respect Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, and others that my wife plays around the house sometimes, but honestly don't like the music much. Then again, as a 50 year old dude, I'm not exactly the target demographic they are shooting for anyway. They are all great at what they do, just not my taste. Likewise, my wife is not exactly bobbing her head and tapping her foot when I kick on some Maiden during a road trip(although I must admit she's a good sport about it.)
