Musicman Big Al Club

Wow!

I'm frankly amazed that I've ever seen one in the flesh - let alone that I've encountered quite a few for sale, given that I'm living on a comparatively small island.
FWIW, I live just outside of a major city (Philadephia) and the only Big Al I've ever seen in the flesh is my own. Although it's probably safe to say that the liklihood of seeing one in my area would be significantly high than seeing one in yours.

I can say that a lot of musicians but especially guitarists and bassists ask me about mine at every show I play it. Most are surprised that it's a Musicman because they never heard of that model (though a few have heard of the Albert Lee signture guitar), let alone seen one in person. But they're always intrigued by it and I get a lot of questions about it.

I only know of one other in my area and that's only because a TB'er very close to where I live was selling one and I commented that if it was a five string I would have driven to his house (about 20 minutes away) that afternoon to buy it. Glad I commented on it because the guy I bought mine from said he saw my post and he contacted me about his five string. A week later it was mine! :D

Well sometimes the TalkBass Classifieds smiles upon thee, eh!!? I went crazy after selling my Travis Bean and decided to finally snag a Big Al 4 SSS from a fellow TB'er.. and before that one even hit the UPS, snagged a 4 H as well lol.
The 4 H landed first, and I'm blown away. Gonna spend a lot of time with it tomorrow. Didn't realize this one had an ebony board til I opened its case. A pleasant surprise because I truly love the ebony board on my Bongo!! Will report back once this one's twin arrives in a few days.

Congrats! There are that many Big Al's out there, so The Owner Of Multiple Big Al Basses is a pretty select club. I myself only own one (5SSS). :crying: :smug:

Looking forward to seeing the pair when your SSS arrives. :bassist:

My Big Al, 4H is one of my Favorites. Wish that I had held on to my 4SSS, as I "gave it away (sold too cheap), 4 years ago". There were just too many options for Me. That ebony board, though... UGH !!! Yeah, I'm a little jealous. CONGRATULATIONS !!!

I always loved that tiramisu pickguard color. on black it's very nice (I think I saw it before on orange).
Agreed, especially with the black hardware and covers.

Chrome hardware and white covers would probably look nice, too. But the black trim on that pickguard on a black bass ... WOW!

... and, the funny thing is, I don't usually care for black basses. But I really like that, probably because a Big Al is anything but subtle and nearly anything that blings it out will look right on it.

there were not very many Dargie Big Als ever made.
i've never seen another. i'm sure there are, but I've not come across them.

a few years back, I asked about it. Sterling responded, but wouldn't (or couldn't) give exact numbers. He just stated that it was a 30 day special order window for that model, and it was not done again. With the incredibly low numbers of Big Al's as a whole, there can't be many.

Im not in the market for one, but ive always been curios to know if the necks on the Big Al feel the same as the necks on StingRays and Bongos. Are the specs the same and do they have the same string spacing?
They are the same/similar to the EBMM Sterling. At least mine feel the same.
** edit** They feel nothing like the necks on my Stingray or Bongos.

If you are looking at a 5 string, the necks on my Big Al5s feel identical to my stingray special (width, thickness, same oil finish). My bongo 5 feels slightly different, but that may be the paint. All are fantastic.
