Just an update. I checked with EB customer service and actually the Big Al does not have an aluminum lined pickguard. It was a typo and has been removed.

So I have a chance to pick up a new Big Al with the the single Humbucker for around $1150 new unplayed. Is this a good deal? How will it sound compared to the SSS model? Thanks.

It will sound nothing like the SSS for one thing. Having said that, it is probably the best single humbucker bass that Music Man makes. For $1150, that's a great deal.

So how will the sounds differ? What is the going price for a new one these days ?

The SSS has more of a vintage vibe to it and has about 16 different sounds possible. The single humbucker sounds more like a traditional Stingray/Sterling and only has about 4 different sounds possible. Neither one is inferior to the other, just different flavors. New they go for about $1700-1800.

If you like the sound of the single H, then yes, you'd be crazy to pass it up.

My personal preference is for the H over the SSS, which is why I bought the H config. I found it to be much hotter output than the SSS.

I'd really love to see EBMM offer the Big Al 5 as a HSS. Now that would be a killer combination (Big Al body + HSS p/u's).

EB: please make a Big Al 5 HSS -- with a 3-way switch like the SR5 for the H, plus the standard controls of the SSS --I could very happily live with just that one bass guitar.

That would be one versatile bass!

Amazon.com had a Big Al listed for under $1200 a week or two ago. Not anymore...
