Different strokes, I guess. I would rock the hell out of it but I would do a white pearl or mirror guard. The sledge silver one is hot too. Really great sales going happening on that site. That Big Al 5H is so tempting. Neo sweet spot humbucker and active passive switch with a 4 band eq? Yes.

I'm GASing heavy for either a Ric or a Stingray and after having tried both, this is only reaffirmed. Either one will definitely be the first bass I own that costs over 3 digits.
I'm sure someone mentioned that he played a Ray on the first Rage album. He briefly toyed with a Ric but wasn't comfortable with it and than played a Jazz Bass (mostly 70's) exclusively up until the Prophets of Rage where he's gone back to the Ray. I always loved his tone on the first Rage album so glad to see that he's brought back a familiar sound.
I thumped on one of these at GC earlier today.
It sounded & felt pretty great. I will keep my eyes open for some used ones to turn up.

To each their own, but I find P's boring and tedious. They just don't bring any excitement sound wise to me. I don't care for the necks either. Plus a Stingray cuts through like a buzzsaw. But, hey you be you and I'll be me That's why it's great we have so much choice.
I love mine - both my SUB and my Stingray. I can remember way back when I was a teen in the 80's, a local music store began to carry them. I thought they were the ugliest frigging things I had ever seen and didn't care what they sounded like. Now, its really all that I play. The way they sound in the mix is incredible - in particular with the bass rolled off and the mids boosted just slightly. You can grab a used Sterling SUB for a couple hundred or less that sounds and feels pretty darned close to the Stingray.
It seemed that every time I liked the bass on a recording well enough to look it up, it was a Stingray. Finally gave in when a 5 HH came up at a decent price on the 'bay (I didn't really expect to win the auction, but figured if I got it for that price it was a win). Was quite nervous as it was my first sight unseen purchase that didn't come with a return policy, but once it arrived- YIKES! Love that bass!
Obviously, no bass has a tone that everybody likes (I even heard one person say they didn't like the sound of a P with flats!) but if this sound appeals to you, you won't believe how happy it will make you when you play it. Of course, YMMV

If you liked the tone of that 2 band Classic Ray, a used USA EBMM SUB is a great wat to see if its for you for not much money...can find them regularly on GC used for under $500...I have gigged one or another of these 100s of times...including two nightd ago...recorded with them....great basses (and I like the painted neck and textured finish...but the early ones with the metal pg require a pg change IMHO)
I quite like both. And occupying the space between a Stingray and a P there is another very sexy bass - the MM Sabre.
Yep. The metal pickguard had to go on mine as well. Fortunately, it's a straight swap with a standard Stingray pickguard. The idea of a metal pickguard wasn't bad as such, but it didn't really work - it made the bass look cheap. The colour of my SUB is graphite, and it looks just fantastic with a black pickguard. drool
Elite jazz all the waySame with Rage, not a fan, but that player sounds great!
Music Mans ("Men"? The debate rages. See what I did there?...) definitely take a lot of players, including me by storm. I can't get that sound out of my head. I just bought a gorgeous American Elite Jazz and it's great, but I picked my 2002 Stingray Five and spent two hours with it last night. I really have a dilemma when deciding which bass to play.
Having said all of this, they aren't universally loved, but they are by a large portion of bassists out there.

I like the over all looks , I like the pick guard-I also like the look without that pickguard, I like the look of the 3/1 head(I don't know why they do it that way...is there a point to it)?
I like single pick up basses.
But;...I will not play a bass that weighs a ton. Most musicman basses I tried did weigh a ton, and as long as I can get the same tone( or VERY nearly the same) from an instrument that is a lot lighter, there is no real need for me to get a MM.

I can't see it on my phone, but he's known for modding his basses. If you do want to add one, though, it wouldn't be difficult. Screws or double sided tape could be used, with or without the pg installed (Just buy one, you know you want to
Yup.. this is the first thing i thought when i saw he was using MM. His Fenders/Laklands had pickups that were handwound by him, some of his effects boxes are made from fuzz/wah parts he modified, and he tweeked out the wiring on his main Ampegs.
His tone from the first Rage album is completely different from his Prophets tone. I know he swapped out one pickup for a Nord Bigman in one of the basses, but i wouldn't be surprised if he swapped out or took out the EB Pre. The stock pre has a baked in sound that doesn't play well with driven tube heads. Haven't heard anything official but that's just my guess.
I'm a MM lover myself, but I wouldn't grab one to get his current tone (munus his amps and effects of course). You can totally nail the tone from the first album though.
