I always seem to pull the G string off of the fretboard on the 5's so they are out. I would love to try a Classic 5 without the compensated nut. It is high on my gas list.

I almost sold my SR5 cuz I kept pulling the g-string off the fret board. Guys in the band won't let me sell it. So I kept playing it. It doesn't happen anymore. I'm sure I changed how I'm playing. But I don't really know what I did to make it stop ... It just stopped being a problem for me. Ymmv

How the Caprice sounds when compared to a PJ bass from Fender?

It was the only bass I tried while I was there, on a Rumble 100, or maybe a 200.
Without comparing side by side with a Fender, I couldn't really answer that question.

Even then I probably couldn't, because a bass sounds like a bass to my ears, LOL

My mileage does vary. I would rather not change my playing style to accommodate an instrument and appease my band mates. Especially because I have never had this problem on any other bass, ever. I simply found a better playing bass. Musicman 5's sound great, I just can't get past that. Especially on a bass that approaches $2000.

It rarely happened in rehearsal but happened every time on stage. So when it counts the bass let me down. Still I would love to try a Classic 5!

Sent her to Nordstrand and Mo put in 2 custom wound Bigman Pickups with a Nordy 3 way preamp. Mo shielded the p/u cavity and then, with no routing...........

Stacked master volume / VTC, active / passive switch, pickup blend, sweepable mids, stacked lows/highs as well as a 5 way coil selector.

She'll cut through the mix and go BOOM when you need her to - versatile perfection !

Well, you just cost me $2,000. Why the hell did they not use the egg on the regular? Oh well. I hope that I dont like the classic neck. I had a 93 (i know its not classic) and the neck did not work for me compared to my 2 year old sr5's.

I'm with you, the egg looks way better than the thing on the SR5 (non classic).

The G was always very close to the edge on them. I had the same problem and altered my style just a bit without really being conscious of it.

For what it's worth, Tim is playing is Classic Stingray in that picture, which dffers slightly from the modern Stingrays. I like the sound my Classic 4 gives my so much more than my 3 band SR5

Without their pickguards, the StingRay and the Precision have very similarly shaped bodies.
I really noticed this when I went to a control-plate instead of a full pickguard on my P bass.

OP- I am not a fan of pickguards in general, so I say remove it, if you don't mind the screw holes.
They don't bother me.

Yep. I played a gig last night with my EBMM SR4. The drummer, the lead guitarist and two random members of the crowd complimented me on the sound. The SR has a lot to do with it, IMHO.

Your goal should be getting your techniques together and playing with other people in a band..not buying another bass.

I've never spent $2k on a bass am fortunate to have some nice "working" basses to chose from. I pick which bass I play to match what band or set we're playing. I also play other instruments that do not belong to me, so I value being able to play whatever is in the setup if I'm asked to step in. In my opinion the mmsr sound was well worth the effort to learn not to pull the G off the fret board. For me it had nothing to do with looks or money. It's all about that time. And honestly I don't know how or why it stopped happening. But it just stopped being an issue for me. I wanted that sound in my lineup of basses. It fits many occasions for me. It's become one of my most played out basses. So my SR5 is a keeper for me. I just thought I'd share my initial frustration and how easy it's become a non-issue.

No worries. We're all different. I'm quite active on stage and the only times I had an issue with it were when I was stepping out to do some showy stuff. Buzzing those notes out really can be embarassing when you are making yourself the center of attention.

It is now a non issue for me as well! Take care and rock the hell out of that Musicman!

If you look at the picture in the first post, it's noticeable that his ray pup doesn't sport the raised pole pieces (they should dump the raised pole pieces idea anyways IMO). His rays are custom made by EBMM. But yeah, pretty much your classic 2 band stingray.

I keep reading this. So somehow your bass let you down? I really don't need to comment on this. I have probably owned 40 basses, and I have never had a bass that let me down "when it counts"?

But if I ever do, I would certainly get rid of it as well.

It's all good stuff. I learned a lot a bout gear reading threads on this site. Truth told I'm NOT very active on stage. I hang out by our drummer! The sr5 is heavy. I play a cirrus if I'm standing a long time or playing an extended period of time just for the weight.
